Yes, surely this has caused<br \/>\nsome conservative commentators to say, &#8220;See, I told you that the<br \/>\nemergent movement was just the newest form of liberalism.&#8221; But they<br \/>\nwere going to say that anyway, no matter what we say. And it&#8217;s also no<br \/>\nsurprise that they completely ignore it when I write something that<br \/>\naligns with their own stances, like my recent affirmation of the<br \/>\nphysical resurrection of Jesus. They go looking for what they want to<br \/>\nfind, and, whaddya know, they find it!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They&#8217;ve also posted an <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/C0m0n\">essay<\/a> I wrote for them on the same issue:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In English, a &#8220;shibboleth&#8221; has, since the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century,<br \/>\nmeant a particularly meaningless differentiator of persons. It seems to<br \/>\nme that Evangelicals are particularly fond of shibboleths. (And, let me<br \/>\nsay, when I capitalize &#8220;Evangelical,&#8221; I mean to imply cultural<br \/>\nEvangelicals &#8211; those who affiliate with the politics, music, media, and<br \/>\nchurches of American Evangelicalism &#8211; as opposed to the many Catholics,<br \/>\nmainline Protestants, Orthodox, and Anabaptists who desire to spread<br \/>\nthe gospel and thus consider themselves &#8220;evangelical.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is also an <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/Slld0\">editorial<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/About-Patheos\/Tim-Dalrymple.html\">Tim Dalrymple<\/a> rebutting me:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It is the use of particular differentiators in particular contexts<br \/>\n(such as skin color in hiring or club membership) that we find<br \/>\nobjectionable. Jones rightly objects to occasions when &#8220;particularly<br \/>\nmeaningless&#8221; differentiators are employed to determine who is and who<br \/>\nis not truly Evangelical. The question is whether Jones is correct that<br \/>\nsame-sex marriage qualifies as a &#8220;particularly meaningless&#8221;<br \/>\ndifferentiator.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Your thoughts?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An interview with me on the issue of gays and the church just went live on the new interfaith website, Patheos.
