But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0814794521?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0814794521\">Jonathan L. Walton<\/a> (who, I must say, was very impressive at Claremont last week) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/blog\/religionandtheology\/1239\/is_the_theologian_an_antiquated_relic_of_a_dying_institution\/\">takes up the challenges laid before the Transforming Theology group by me and Jack Fitzmier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan oversimplifies my statements to the group, but he does get the sentiment right.&nbsp; <span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"jonathan l walton.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/198\/import\/jonathan%20l%20walton.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px;float: right\" height=\"240\" width=\"160\" \/><\/span>In the final session, I told the group that they had been outflanked by conservative theologians, and, as a result, have been defined by them.&nbsp; Back in the day of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Jennings_Bryan\">William Jennings Bryan<\/a>, liberalism was a populist message, but now liberals have become the elites, and conservatives have grabbed the populist mantle.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Jonathan already gets it.&nbsp; His presentation was more of a sermon than a lecture, and the fact that he blogs at the excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/\">Religion Dispatches<\/a> (I demand that you all subscribe now!), shows that he is as interested in the e-world as the academy. Even his scholarship focuses on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0814794521?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=theoblogy-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0814794521\">intersection of church, theology, and television<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, his post wrestles with the challenge before progressive theologians.&nbsp; If there is going to be a recovery, Jonathan will likely lead the charge. Money Quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is why any talk about rekindling theological imagination must<br \/>\ndistinguish the&nbsp;difference between being popular and making an<br \/>\nimpact.&nbsp;&nbsp;Let&#8217;s not forget that the progressive, prophetic tradition has<br \/>\nalways made an impact yet has never been popular.&nbsp;&nbsp;Prophets work from<br \/>\nthe margins. And their voice, when at its best, is rejected by the<br \/>\nmainstream. This is why progressive theologians should not be pulled<br \/>\ninto a popularity contest.
