{"id":171,"date":"2009-01-26T13:12:46","date_gmt":"2009-01-26T13:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/original-sin-a-depraved-idea.html"},"modified":"2009-01-26T13:12:46","modified_gmt":"2009-01-26T13:12:46","slug":"original-sin-a-depraved-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/original-sin-a-depraved-idea.html","title":{"rendered":"Original Sin: A Depraved Idea"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><u>The Original Sin Series<\/u><br \/><b>Intro<\/b>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/original-sin-my-intuition.html\">Intuition<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/original-sin-a-definition.html\">Definition<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/original-sin-the-genesis-of-a.html\">Genesis<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/tonyjones\/2009\/02\/original-sin-jesus-ambivalence.html\">Jesus<\/a>-Paul-Augustine-Calvin-Conclusion<\/div>\n<p>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"sin.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/198\/import\/sin.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt;float: left\" height=\"360\" width=\"361\" \/><\/span>When I was growing up in a moderate, centrist church &#8212; somewhere between mainline Christianity and evangelicalism &#8212; <b><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Original_Sin\">Original Sin<\/a> was a given<\/b>.&nbsp; I first learned about it in youth group, and we regularly talked about it.&nbsp; Actually, it&#8217;s more accurate to say that we talked about a life with Christ, and the notion of Original Sin was in the background.&nbsp; It was assumed.&nbsp; And I cannot remember that it was ever debated.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, I assumed that the doctrine of Original Sin was a biblical notion, and that all Christians accepted it as gospel truth.&nbsp; Of course, neither is true.<\/p>\n<p>In college, Original Sin was also assumed by the Campus Crusaders and Navigators who ministered to me, as well as in the little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valleybiblechurch.org\/\">bible church<\/a> that I attended.&nbsp; In fact, here&#8217;s a telling section from that church&#8217;s current <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.valleybiblechurch.org%2F&amp;ei=uhl-SazDH9G3tweHztS7Dg&amp;usg=AFQjCNEI-qapqDkxFSe-Lf-YrllzM56_ng&amp;sig2=Kf_7Nh9kvWJP8tj7PmewcA\">web page on doctrine<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\"> <font color=\"#003366\">Man (Anthropology)<\/font><\/font><\/h3>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana\" size=\"2\">Man was created in the image of God to enjoy friendship with Him (<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.gospelcom.net\/passage\/?search=Genesis%201:26&amp;version=47;\" target=\"_blank\">Genesis 1:26<\/a>).  Man sinned and his fellowship with God was broken (<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.gospelcom.net\/passage\/?search=Genesis%203&amp;version=47;\" target=\"_blank\">Genesis 3<\/a>).  Man is now deceitful and desperately wicked (<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.gospelcom.net\/passage\/?search=Jeremiah%2017:9&amp;version=47;\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremiah 17:9<\/a>).<br \/>\nHe has the capacity for all sin and lives his life independent of his<br \/>\nCreator. In his natural rebellious state, his destiny is to spend<br \/>\neternity totally separated from God in the lake of fire prepared for<br \/>\nthe devil and his angels (<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.gospelcom.net\/passage\/?search=II%20Thessalonians%201:8&amp;version=47;\" target=\"_blank\">II Thessalonians 1:8<\/a>;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.gospelcom.net\/passage\/?search=Revelation%2020:11-15&amp;version=47;\" target=\"_blank\">Revelation 20:11-15<\/a>).<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But, while in college, I also took at class on the theology of Augustine from an eccentric professor, Charles Stinson, and therein I learned that the great father of Western theology was the author of the doctrine of Original Sin.&nbsp; Of course, Augustine was not making it up <i>ex novo<\/i>, but was taking as his inspiration the account of creation in Genesis 3 and certain Pauline texts.<\/p>\n<p>In seminary, I learned from <a href=\"http:\/\/documents.fuller.edu\/provost\/faculty\/dbsearch\/final_record.asp?id=84\">John Thompson<\/a> that John Calvin and his theological heirs reified the notion of Original Sin and that it hadn&#8217;t played much of a role in medieval and Scholastic theology.<\/p>\n<p>And sometime later, I discovered that whole branches of the Christian family tree &#8212; most notably, the Orthodox Church &#8212; has never embraced Original Sin.<\/p>\n<p><b>I have come to reject the notion of Original Sin<\/b>.&nbsp; <b>I consider it neither biblically, philosophically, nor scientifically tenable.<\/b>&nbsp; And I&#8217;m going to spend this week blogging about why I&#8217;ve rejected it.&nbsp; I look forward to hearing your thoughts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(HT: <a href=\"http:\/\/experimentaltheology.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/original-sin-human-biodegradability-in.html\">Richard Beck<\/a> for inspiring me.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Original Sin SeriesIntro&#8211;Intuition&#8211;Definition&#8211;Genesis&#8211;Jesus-Paul-Augustine-Calvin-Conclusion When I was growing up in a moderate, centrist church &#8212; somewhere between mainline Christianity and evangelicalism &#8212; Original Sin was a given.&nbsp; I first learned about it in youth group, and we regularly talked about it.&nbsp; Actually, it&#8217;s more accurate to say that we talked about a life with Christ,&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":134,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[25,7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-171","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-church-history","category-theology"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
