{"id":165,"date":"2009-01-22T08:04:33","date_gmt":"2009-01-22T08:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/interfaith-heroes-month.html"},"modified":"2009-01-22T08:04:33","modified_gmt":"2009-01-22T08:04:33","slug":"interfaith-heroes-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/interfaith-heroes-month.html","title":{"rendered":"Interfaith Heroes Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Geez, I had no idea.&nbsp; It&#8217;s actually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readthespirit.com\/explore\/2009\/01\/335-celebrate-inspirational-neighbors-in-2nd-annual-interfaith-heroes-month.html\">Interfaith Heroes Month<\/a>, at least according to David Crumm, late of the Detroit Free Press and now the editor of ReadTheSpirit.com.&nbsp; Today he asks one of my favorite persons in the world, Sheryl Fullerton (my editor at Jossey-Bass) to reflect on inter-faith work, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readthespirit.com\/explore\/2009\/01\/350-samir-selmanovic-and-the-story-of-seeing-god-in-the-other.html\">she speaks of another of my favorite persons in the world, Samir Selmanovic<\/a>, the convener of the amazing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithhousemanhattan.org\/\">Faith House Manhattan<\/a>.&nbsp; Sheryl is currently editing Samir&#8217;s first book, and here&#8217;s her money quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I remember when I first opened up Samir&#8217;s proposal. His opening<br \/>\nstatement hit me right between the eyes: &#8220;For years I&#8217;ve been talking<br \/>\nabout three monotheistic religions to <span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"faith house manhattan.png\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/198\/import\/faith%20house%20manhattan.png\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px;float: right\" height=\"137\" width=\"182\" \/><\/span>nonbelievers. And here is what I<br \/>\nhear: &#8216;At best, Jews, Christians, and Muslims look like three religious<br \/>\nstooges in a slapstick comedy. At worst, they look like three brothers<br \/>\nwith hands clasped in prayer and soaked in blood.&#8217; We have littered<br \/>\nhistory with incredible amounts of stupidity, injustice and suffering.<br \/>\nThe world has simply had it with us.
