{"id":153,"date":"2009-01-16T14:25:19","date_gmt":"2009-01-16T14:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/the-minnesota-boy-from-milk.html"},"modified":"2009-01-16T14:25:19","modified_gmt":"2009-01-16T14:25:19","slug":"the-minnesota-boy-from-milk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/tonyjones\/2009\/01\/the-minnesota-boy-from-milk.html","title":{"rendered":"The Minnesota Boy from Milk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the movie, <i>Milk<\/i>, there is a poignant scene in which Harvey Milk answers the phone and on the other end of the line is a wheelchair-bound boy who says that his family is abusing him because of his same sex attraction.&nbsp; Milk tells the boy to get out of the house and fly to San Francisco where he&#8217;d be surrounded by people who would accept him.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been a search on for the boy, since he&#8217;s not in the book on which the film is based, and he&#8217;s not named in Milk&#8217;s own journals.<\/p>\n<p>The boy has supposedly <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.citypages.com\/blotter\/2009\/01\/harvey_milk_and.php\">made himself known<\/a> to the Twin Cities alt weekly, the <i>City Pages<\/i>.&nbsp; And it turns out that, if Gerard Dols is telling the truth, he is even more involved in the story.&nbsp; It seems that a phone call from him might have provoked Milk&#8217;s boyfriend, Jack, to commit suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, Dols reports that he no longer lives the homosexual lifestyle:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Anyway, I am the Minnesota boy in the&nbsp;<i>Milk <\/i>movie. I am the boy<br \/>\nfrom Richmond. I am now a born-again Christian.
