Will Americans prop up an ailing economy by spending&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-1215-luxury-spending-20101215,0,3412499.story\" id=\"lu55\" title=\"lots of money\">lots of money<\/a>&nbsp;on Christmas presents?<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left;padding-right: 10px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.christianitytoday.com\/women\/upload\/2010\/12\/shop2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.christianitytoday.com\/women\/upload\/2010\/12\/shop2-thumb.jpg\" width=\"221\" height=\"330\" alt=\"shop2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Wherever the numbers end up, women will make the majority of the decisions surrounding purchases throughout December. As Belinda Luscombe recently&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,2030913,00.html\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<i>Time<\/i>, &#8220;[Women] make 85% of the buying decisions or are the chief purchasing officers of their households.&#8221; Further, as women control more than 50 percent of private wealth in America, and as women &#8212; in certain age groups and metropolitan centers &#8212; begin to outearn men (see &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/interactive\/0,31813,2031700,00.html\">The Growing Buying Power of Women<\/a>&#8220;), Luscombe comments, &#8220;The more money women earn, the exponentially more money they manage. And women are increasingly making the calls where men have traditionally held sway.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Questions about how and where we spend money are relevant at all times. But December marks a time when we spend money in disproportionate amounts compared with the other eleven months of the year.
