{"id":368,"date":"2010-09-15T13:25:16","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T13:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/thinplaces\/2010\/09\/perfectly-human-tiny-hands-holding-a-big-faith-by-kristin-smith.html"},"modified":"2010-09-15T13:25:16","modified_gmt":"2010-09-15T13:25:16","slug":"perfectly-human-tiny-hands-holding-a-big-faith-by-kristin-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/thinplaces\/2010\/09\/perfectly-human-tiny-hands-holding-a-big-faith-by-kristin-smith.html","title":{"rendered":"Perfectly Human: Tiny Hands Holding a Big Faith by Kristin Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/thinplaces\/ashersmith.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ashersmith.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/113\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/09\/ashersmith-thumb-200x133-17864.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left;margin: 0 20px 20px 0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">We arrive home from school around<br \/>\nnoon and I&#8217;m already tired as I change Asher&#8217;s pull-up and make his lunch.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>Then I once again hoist the weight of<br \/>\nhis 50-pound body against mine, and I carry him to his high chair.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>He always immediately shouts out, &#8220;BOOOOK!&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd I of course oblige and read him the daily devotion from our toddler<br \/>\ndevotion book.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>His eyes stay with me as I<br \/>\nread the verse for the day.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>My<br \/>\ndaughter Eden and I say the prayer at the end of the devotion and we always end<br \/>\nwith an &#8220;Aaaa&#8230;..&#8221; long pause giving Asher time to chime in with his loud and<br \/>\nproud, &#8220;MEN!&#8221;<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>Immediately after Asher exclaims<br \/>\n&#8220;Cads!&#8221;<span>&nbsp;<\/span>I pull out the memory<br \/>\nverse cards.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>I say &#8220;1 John 4:16 says&#8230;.?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">and Asher replies slowly,<br \/>\ndeliberately, &#8220;Gah&#8230;. i&#8230; uv&#8221;<span>&nbsp; <\/span>(God<br \/>\nis love).<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>He always looks up with a great big<br \/>\ngrin.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>I give him a high five as I<br \/>\nfeel my throat close up and my eyes water&#8211;everyday.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>I started these lunchtime devotions<br \/>\nat the beginning of the new year for my 3-year-old daughter, Eden.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>Asher loves books, so I knew he<br \/>\nwouldn&#8217;t mind a bit of lunchtime reading.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>But I never thought with his severe cognitive delays and lack of speech,<br \/>\nhe could know verses from the Bible, or that he could understand how to<br \/>\ncommunicate with God through prayer.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>A couple of months ago we had<br \/>\nguests over for dinner. Asher watched us all bow and pray over the meal.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>When the food had long been blessed,<br \/>\nAsher bowed his own head and folded his own tiny hands.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>He said something like, &#8220;Ga&#8230;.ebu<br \/>\njebu debus a awa ebu&#8230;.MEN!&#8221;<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>He looked up to a table full of<br \/>\nmisty-eyed moms and dads.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>Our<br \/>\nguests marveled at the blessing of hearing Asher&#8217;s sweet voice talking to<br \/>\nGod.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>No one at our table<br \/>\nunderstood the words he uttered in his prayer.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>Though it would seem clear that our Maker knows his every<br \/>\nutterance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At bedtime we whisper prayers into<br \/>\nthe night&#8211; the same prayer every night&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;Dear God, thank you for this day,<br \/>\nwe pray that you would continue to grow Asher big and strong (Asher shows me<br \/>\nhis muscle pose).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;We pray that you would keep Asher<br \/>\nhealthy, and&#8230; (extra long pause). &#8220;&#8230;Ha-appy!&#8221; Asher says with his big<br \/>\ngrin.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>We finish with our usual &#8220;Aaa&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;&#8230;MEN.&#8221;<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>My heart is full as I close his<br \/>\ndoor.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>I consider<br \/>\nAsher&#8217;s prayers a true gift daily bestowed upon me by the One who knows the<br \/>\naches of my body and the pains of my heart.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>Asher is the son of a pastor, but I&#8217;m<br \/>\nafraid I never imagined him being able to have faith.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>I had imagined him someday being able<br \/>\nto walk, talk, read, and write.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>I<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t know why, but I never thought about what his relationship with God could<br \/>\nlook like.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>I never thought about<br \/>\nhow his faith life might grow and encourage family, our friends and myself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Asher&#8217;s eyes grow wide with<br \/>\ncuriosity when I read Bible stories to him.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>He has a hunger and a thirst for knowing about Jesus. In his<br \/>\nown precious way at 6-years old, he is fostering a faith life all his own.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>Asher has proven to me time and again<br \/>\nthat &#8220;Nothing is impossible with God.&#8221; And what a mighty God we serve, &#8220;Right<br \/>\nAsher?&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His eyes do the talking that his lips cannot, &#8220;Of course mama&#8221;, as if<br \/>\nhe has known this all along.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span>I<br \/>\nnever imagined that my son&#8217;s tiny hands would hold such a big faith.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">*<i>Kristin Smith is the wife of Beau Smith, a Presbyterian<br \/>\ncollege pastor at California Polytechnic University.&nbsp; She divides her time between being a pastor&#8217;s wife and a<br \/>\nmommy to Asher Gradon, their 6-year-old son, and Eden Grace, their 3-year-old<br \/>\ndaughter.&nbsp; Asher was born with a<br \/>\ncondition affecting his muscles, cognitive abilities and his size.
