Kate Hudson has grown up in Hollywood, but she\u2019s managed to stay remarkably grounded \u2014 thanks to the straightforward advice of her famous parents, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with Variety<\/em>, the “Almost Famous” star opened up about the lessons she learned early on about fame, balance, and self-worth \u2014 lessons that have shaped her career and her outlook on life.<\/p>\n

\u201cLove what you do because you love it; don\u2019t love it because you rely on it,\u201d Hudson recalled her stepfather, Russell, telling her. \u201cBecause it\u2019s so hard to rely on this business \u2014 it\u2019s going to throw you all over the place.\u201d<\/p>\n

That reminder to stay centered proved invaluable when Hudson\u2019s career skyrocketed after her breakout role in “Almost Famous” in 2000. Rather than chasing fame, she says she learned to focus on the work itself \u2014 and on what really matters beyond the cameras.<\/p>\n

Her mother, Goldie Hawn, gave equally impactful advice. \u201cThank God I had a mom who said, \u2018Make your own way,\u2019\u201d Hudson said. \u201cWhen you become successful in the arts \u2014 and what I mean by \u2018successful\u2019 is when you\u2019re making other people a lot of money \u2014 people really like to put you in a box. But nobody becomes an artist to be put in a cage.\u201d<\/p>\n

That spirit of independence runs deep in the Hawn\u2013Russell family. Early in her career, Hudson said she even turned down a role in one of Russell\u2019s films because she didn\u2019t want to be \u201cdefined\u201d by her parents\u2019 fame. \u201cIt means having to make fearless and risk-taking decisions that are really, really hard to do when you have a status quo that\u2019s safe,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

She also recalled a time before her breakout success when she almost had to \u201cdivorce\u201d her parents legally in order to work as an adult. \u201cI had gotten this part that they wanted me to basically divorce my parents so that I could work as an adult,\u201d Hudson shared. \u201cMy mom was like, \u2018No, never happening,\u2019 but then I got the \u2018Party of Five\u2019 and it was so great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now 46, Hudson said her perspective on Hollywood has evolved. \u201cI felt lucky that I knew the peaks and valleys of this roller-coaster ride,\u201d she told Variety<\/em>. \u201cOne minute you\u2019re the hot ing\u00e9nue, and then the next minute you\u2019re wondering why you\u2019re not in the conversation for certain things that you know you can do. It\u2019s never been something that has defined my value.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off-screen, Hudson says her greatest joy is motherhood. She\u2019s mom to Ryder, 21, Bingham, 13, and Rani, 7 \u2014 and she\u2019s learned how to balance career and family with intention. \u201cThere are sacrifices I\u2019ve made along the way to be at home,\u201d she said. \u201cA lot of opportunities I had to say no to, which came as an easy no. But as Rani started to get older, it was time to start making career decisions that I felt like I could make. And I got really lucky that I could make them not based on money.\u201d<\/p>\n

That mindset has paid off. Hudson\u2019s new movie “Song Sung Blue” \u2014 in which she stars alongside Hugh Jackman \u2014 is already earning early Oscar buzz ahead of its Christmas release.<\/p>\n

As she enters this next chapter, Hudson says she\u2019s at peace with where she is \u2014 both as an actress and as a woman. \u201cAs you get older, you realize you\u2019re the only one who makes the decision not to allow yourself to be in that cage,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about being fearless \u2014 and that\u2019s something I learned from my parents.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
