A Missouri family preparing to start a new chapter instead found themselves facing unimaginable heartbreak after a mother of five was fatally shot while buying slushies with two of her children.<\/p>\n

Shakeela Martin, 35, was killed just before midnight on Tuesday, June 30th, outside a BP gas station in Ferguson, Missouri, after an altercation that began inside the convenience store escalated into gunfire in the parking lot, according to the Ferguson Police Department.<\/p>\n

Police say Martin had stopped at the gas station with her 9-year-old and 6-year-old children to buy frozen drinks on a hot summer evening. As they walked back to their vehicle, multiple shots rang out. Investigators believe Martin was an innocent bystander who was caught in the gunfire.<\/p>\n

Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle said Martin had simply been running an ordinary errand with her children when tragedy struck.<\/p>\n

“She was here to purchase some soft drinks for her young kids,” Doyle told First Alert 4. “They’re physically unhurt but obviously hurt emotionally. You can only imagine what a child would go through watching their mom being murdered in front of them.”<\/p>\n

The two children were not physically injured, but authorities acknowledged the emotional trauma of witnessing the shooting. A second adult victim was also struck by gunfire and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police have not said whether that individual was involved in the altercation or was the intended target.<\/p>\n

Investigators believe the confrontation started inside the convenience store before spilling into the parking lot, where the shooting occurred. No arrests have been announced, and authorities continue to search for the gunman.<\/p>\n

Martin’s death has been especially heartbreaking for loved ones because it came just hours before a milestone her family had eagerly anticipated.<\/p>\n

According to a GoFundMe<\/a> campaign created on behalf of the family, Martin was scheduled to move her five children into a new home the very next day. To celebrate, she had taken two of her children out for slushies before their planned move.<\/p>\n

“Our hearts are shattered as we mourn the unimaginable loss of our beloved Shakeela Martin, who was taken from us far too soon at just 35 years old,” the fundraiser states.<\/p>\n

Organizers described Martin as “a devoted mother to five beautiful children who were the center of her world.” They also noted that she did not have life insurance, and donations will help cover funeral and burial expenses, with any remaining funds supporting the immediate needs of her children.<\/p>\n

“We will forever cherish Shakeela’s memory and the love she gave so freely to everyone around her,” the fundraiser says.<\/p>\n

As investigators work to identify the person responsible, Martin’s family is left grieving a life cut tragically short and comforting five children whose celebration of a new beginning turned into a night they will never forget.
