{"id":59976,"date":"2011-10-22T01:17:08","date_gmt":"2011-10-22T01:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/thesmokingpriest\/?p=59976"},"modified":"2011-10-22T01:17:08","modified_gmt":"2011-10-22T01:17:08","slug":"the-alarming-rise-of-depression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/thesmokingpriest\/2011\/10\/the-alarming-rise-of-depression.html","title":{"rendered":"The Alarming Rise of Depression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This week the Centers for Disease Control revealed some alarming statistics regarding the problem of depression here in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The use of antidepressant drugs has soared nearly 400% since 1988.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Antidepressant medication is the most commonly used form of medication for people between the ages of 18 \u2013 44.\u00a0 One in twenty-five teens regularly takes antidepressant pills.\u00a0 The study also showed that nearly one in four women ages 40 to 59 are taking antidepressants.\u00a0 Furthermore, more than 60% of Americans have taken antidepressant medication for two years or longer, with 14% taking the medication for 10 years or more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">There are genetic and organic causes for depression, but most depression is being caused by the dysfunctional society that we live in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">What is the remedy for this alarming crisis?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">First of all, we need to remedy our relationship with God.\u00a0 Recently, the outdoor sign of a Christian church of another denomination was advertising their health program: yoga, Yahweh Yoga and Zumba.\u00a0 Exercise is important, but what we really need is the Eucharist, Mary and Confession.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Secondly, our family life needs to be strong. \u00a0A great place to start is for moms to stay home and take care of the kids and for families to have dinner every night as a family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Thirdly, we need friends, and not friends on the Internet, but real friends; friends that we talk to in person.\u00a0 Friends that we can hug, shake a hand, enjoy a good laugh, a good glass of wine, and yes, even a good cigar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">If everyone were to implement these three things, I am sure that the next study from the Centers for Disease Control will show a dramatic decline in the use of antidepressant pills.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week the Centers for Disease Control revealed some alarming statistics regarding the problem of depression here in the United States.\u00a0 The use of antidepressant drugs has soared nearly 400% since 1988.
