{"id":59909,"date":"2011-04-14T09:41:54","date_gmt":"2011-04-14T09:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/thesmokingpriest\/?p=59909"},"modified":"2011-04-15T13:53:34","modified_gmt":"2011-04-15T13:53:34","slug":"why-we-need-the-catholic-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/thesmokingpriest\/2011\/04\/why-we-need-the-catholic-church.html","title":{"rendered":"Why we need the Catholic Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201c I don\u2019t need organized religion to be a good person,\u201d is the usual response that I get when I knock at random on the doors of the homes around my parish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When I agree that they do not need organized religion to be a good person, people are taken aback.\u00a0\u00a0 Catholics are not called to be good people; we are called to be saints.\u00a0 <em>\u201cI have been crucified with Christ, and I live now not with my own life but with the life of Christ who lives in me.\u00a0 The life I now live in this body I live in faith: faith in the Son of God who loved me and who sacrificed himself for my sake\u201d <\/em>(Galatians 2: 19-20).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">We are called to be saints and we do need a church community in order to reach that goal.\u00a0 We do need the Catholic Church in order to be a saint, not that everyone who is in the Catholic Church is a saint, but that the Catholic Church has what it takes to make us into a saint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">First of all, the Catholic Church gives us the Holy Bible, the Word of God.\u00a0 Yes, it is true that all Christians love the Bible, but we have something that no one else has.\u00a0 We have a body of Bishops with the Bishop of Rome as the head, who, by God\u2019s design, serves the revealed Word of God with the task of giving an authentic interpretation to the Word.\u00a0\u00a0 The Magisterium is the sole interpreter of Scripture and this frees the Church from ambiguity and arbitrary decisions, and it provides doctrinal unity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Secondly, the Catholic Church gives us the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the Bread of Life.\u00a0 <em>\u201cAnyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day.\u00a0 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink\u201d <\/em>(John 6: 54-55).\u00a0 At every Catholic Mass, we receive Jesus, not symbolically or spiritually, but really.\u00a0 Through the miracle of Transubstantiation, the bread is no longer bread and the wine is no longer wine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Thirdly, the Catholic Church gives us the Sacrament of Confession.\u00a0 <em>\u201cReceive the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained\u201d<\/em> (John 20: 23).\u00a0 Jesus acts or works through the Catholic priest and forgives us of our sins.\u00a0 The Sacrament of Reconciliation provides profound peace, because it is through the sacrament that we know for sure that God has heard us and that God has forgiven us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Fourthly, the Catholic Church gives us the Mother.\u00a0 Mary, the Mother of Jesus is our mother.\u00a0 <em>\u201cSeeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, \u2018Woman, this is your son.\u2019\u00a0 Then to the disciple he said, \u2018This is your mother.\u2019 <\/em>(John 19: 26-27).\u00a0 The Catholic Church has always experienced her maternal love as the Church journeys along this earthly pilgrimage to eternal life in Heaven.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So, it is true that we do not need a church in order for us to be good.
