{"id":32,"date":"2012-02-08T04:03:24","date_gmt":"2012-02-08T04:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/theroadyoureon\/?p=32"},"modified":"2012-02-08T04:03:24","modified_gmt":"2012-02-08T04:03:24","slug":"five-reasons-to-study-the-bible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/theroadyoureon\/2012\/02\/five-reasons-to-study-the-bible.html","title":{"rendered":"Five Reasons to Study the Bible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regretful bride Kim Kardashian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christiantoday.com\/article\/kim.kardashian.is.game.for.some.bible.study\/29249.htm\">recently tweeted<\/a>: \u201cI want to start a Bible study group with my friends.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Here are five reasons to study the Bible:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Anyone can benefit from reading the Bible, which is full of the epic stories of good versus evil.\u00a0 Just as reading good literature engages our mind, studying the Bible can be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/25\/books\/review\/the-book-of-books-what-literature-owes-the-bible.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=print\">intellectually and emotionally stimulating<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Bible teaches through negative examples what not to do, with stories of blind trust (Samson); betrayal (Judas); and murder and cover-up (David and Bathsheba).\u00a0 The Bible also teaches through positive examples on the meaning of generosity (the widow\u2019s mite); loyalty (David and Jonathan); and forgiveness (Joseph and his brothers).<\/li>\n<li>The Bible offers encouragement.\u00a0 The Psalmist describes God as our rock, fortress and deliverer. \u00a0Matthew\u2019s Gospel tells us that not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without our Father knowing it.<\/li>\n<li>A Bible study with friends can create stronger bonds and an environment of intimacy.<\/li>\n<li>Most important, Bible study reveals the true nature of Jesus Christ, who identified himself as the Son of God. \u00a0\u201cA man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher,\u201d C. S.
