Another World: A New Year of Possibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnother world is not only possible. On a quiet day I can hear her breathing.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Softly, on the sigh of a breeze<\/p>\n

in the steady certainty of her quiet exhale<\/p>\n

another way unfurls, answering our longing<\/p>\n

for a different world, a place of peace and possibilities<\/p>\n

where children always have enough<\/p>\n

and mothers and fathers<\/p>\n

always love without limitation<\/p>\n

giving no thought to the things that hinder<\/p>\n

or impoverish their hopes, their dreams.<\/p>\n

Where on this wide round planet can<\/p>\n

that kind of world exist if we cannot find it<\/p>\n

within our fragile hearts, tender with desire<\/p>\n

bruised from too many years of silencing,<\/p>\n

too many clamoring voices drowning out<\/p>\n

the visions of prophets and seers<\/p>\n

poets and peons, the brilliant crazy ones<\/p>\n

who know that the only thing we need<\/p>\n

to do to change everything is to be still<\/p>\n

open our eyes, un-jail our hearts, rid our tongues<\/p>\n

of hateful words, liberate our weary minds<\/p>\n

of bigotry and separation, open our lungs<\/p>\n

to joy and celebration, ride the winds of change<\/p>\n

as if we had no other choice.<\/p>\n

We must bury our war dead forever<\/p>\n

bury our wars, too. We must cultivate<\/p>\n

compassion for everything, big or little, human or not<\/p>\n

making room for every woe, every jubilation<\/p>\n

for it is only here inside our blood and our bones<\/p>\n

that the breath of the world can birth her precious promise<\/p>\n

fill us with the fortitude we need to create<\/p>\n

a new way of life, a new way to live.<\/p>\n

If we listen we will know how to join her<\/p>\n

in her quiet revolution, how to echo her nonviolent wail<\/p>\n

for justice and equality for every being<\/p>\n

everywhere a breath is breathed, everywhere a life is born<\/p>\n

until at last we all are free to come home<\/p>\n

to the only home we have every truly wanted<\/p>\n

the only place where we can resuscitate our meager hopes<\/p>\n

with the replenishing air of her unfailing breath.<\/p>\n
