Earth Speaks
\n<\/strong>By Elizabeth Hazel<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Earth speaks to those who listen:
\nMaternal lectures in shades of green,
\nSisterly riddles in coy lagoons and comic swamps,
\nAnd her epic daughters,
\nMountain covens meet to ponder immortality.<\/p>\n

She thinks in seasons and paints in time:
\nImpressionistic springs give way to pointilistic summers;
\nDrab and tattered autumns yield to ruthless winter whites
\nAs frost giants gnash through horn-blasted blizzards.<\/p>\n

Earth speaks to those who listen:
\nThe North Star is poised upon the axis of her turnings,
\nAnd steers her through tides of space and time.
\nThe pulse of her journey thrums through sand and soil,
\nAnd her blood churns through rivers and streams.
\nHer body communicates with force and subtlety,
\nAnd few can penetrate her family secrets.
\nHer moon conducts exchanges with neighborly planets
\nAnd imports overseas from remote suns.
\nLight year accounts in her cosmic ledger
\nScore tallies that beggar all reckoning.
\nContrivances may take her measure
\nBut know not her meaning
\nOr delight in her passions.<\/p>\n

Earth speaks to those who listen
\nIn the oldest language of all;
\nWith the nouns of creation,
\nWith verbs of being,
\nAnd adjectives of multiplicity.
\nHers is the greatest song
\nThe deeps call to the heights
\nIn a symphonic canon of sea and land;
\nAnd all hearts resound to her sonorous chords.<\/p>\n
