Is why I get uncomfortable <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/theirbadmother\/2010\/01\/the-first-of-many-sundays.html\">re-embracing my Christian upbringing<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>1) <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5447408\/pat-robertson-thousands-died-because-haitian-slaves-swore-a-pact-with-the-devil-for-their-freedom\">Pat Robertson on Haiti<\/a>, which has just suffered a disaster of Lisbon earthquake proportions: Haitians are &#8220;cursed&#8221; because their<br \/>\nancestors &#8220;swore a pact to the devil&#8221; to liberate themselves from the<br \/>\nFrench in 1804. &#8220;True story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; That&#8217;s right. CURSED. By GOD. Pat Robertson&#8217;s God is not my God.<\/p>\n<p>2) Heidi Montag Pratt, avowed Christian who <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/gospelsoundcheck\/2010\/01\/heidi-montags-new-album-reveal.html\">wanted to make a Christian music album<\/a>, on something she decided to sing about: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebritynews\/news\/heidi-montag-new-song-eat-my-panties-off-me-1970241\" target=\"_blank\"><em>&#8220;Come eat my panties off of me \/ Do whatever you feel comes naturally<\/em>.&#8221; <\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Thump a bible one day, smut it up the next. If it gets you attention, that&#8217;s all that matters, because doesn&#8217;t God want it that way? Heidi Montag&#8217;s God is not my God.<\/p>\n<p>And don&#8217;t even get me started on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/david-nichtern\/tiger-woods-buddhism-and_b_418399.html\">Brit Hume<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carrie_Prejean\">Carrie Prejean<\/a>, who hates the idea of gay marriage but thought that God wanted her to have breast implants and pose for semi-nude photos.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know, <i>I know<\/i>: these are not representative of Christians or Christianity. They are failures of Christianity, in their own ways &#8211; in the case of Robertson and Montag-Pratt, two very different ways &#8211; and I shouldn&#8217;t let their examples dissuade me from approaching Christianity with an open heart over <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/theirbadmother\/2010\/01\/my-year-of-believing-dangerously.html\">the course of my spiritual journey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But still. Identifying myself as being in community with the hateful Robertson and the vapid Montag? Not so compelling. I really need to look past this. How do faithful Christians &#8211; of any denomination &#8211; look past this kind of thing?
