When I told her that we were going to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadamomsblog.com\/2009\/12\/princesses-can-be-awesome-if-you-strap-blades-to-their-feet.html\">go see Disney Princesses on Ice<\/a>,* she asked, &#8220;<i>will they be playing hockey?<\/i>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8212; &#8220;No, but they&#8217;ll be skating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Will it be fast skating?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; &#8220;Pretty fast.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Okay then.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We brought along a Snow White costume that she inherited from a cousin, which she insisted that she was not going to wear &#8211; &#8220;Can&#8217;t I bring my witch costume? Or Buzz Lightyear?&#8221; &#8211; until we got to the show and she saw her best friend decked out in her best princess finery, at which point she decided, as I had expected, that she <i>would<\/i> be a princess, but only if she could keep her pants on underneath the dress, &#8220;<i>because that&#8217;s where my pockets are, and I have stuff in there.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>And so she did, and it was awesome. Because she knows that being a princess is just a matter of being your own darn self, sticker-filled pockets and all.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/theirbadmother\/budge-deals.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"budge-deals.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/assets_c\/2009\/12\/budge-deals-thumb-400x533-10258.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px;text-align: center\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/span>Some might quibble with me on that point. Some might &#8211; would &#8211; say that princesses are inherently problematic, from a feminist perspective, or whatever. I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/herbadmother.com\/2009\/05\/hello-princess\/\">waffled around on those arguments myself<\/a>. But then I see this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/theirbadmother\/budge-white.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"budge-white.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/112\/import\/assets_c\/2009\/12\/budge-white-thumb-400x533-10260.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px;text-align: center\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><\/span>&#8230;and listen to her explain how she likes how Ariel rescues the prince and how the girl-skaters are more fun to watch than the boy-skaters and how it was really smart of Cinderella to save her shoe and did Mulan <i>really<\/i> fight all those soldiers and did I know that the bad fairy (from Sleeping Fairy) is kind of neat because <i>she blows stuff up with fire?<\/i> and I think, <i>whatever<\/i>. Because, my girl? She gets it. And if there&#8217;s a little sparkly princess action bound up in that <i>it<\/i>, then fine.<\/p>\n<p>There are worse things.
