Have you ever stopped to wonder when your behaviors cross
\nover the line from desires to addictions or obsessions? When specifically does
\nthat perfectly normal act take on a life of its own and become a negative driving
\nforce in your life? The answers to these questions are not as cut and dried as
\nmost people believe and, as I discuss in my book “The Law of Sobriety”
\nthat specific tipping point moment may even register in our minds and in our
\nthoughts. While it may not be a pinpoint in our memories once it has happened that
\nnormal behavior of shopping, eating, exercising, texting, surfing the internet,
\nour Facebook page or whatever the focus is becomes the driving force that
\noverrides our normal behavior.<\/p>\n

In essence an addition is maladaptive or harmful because of
\nthe persistence of the behavior. \u00a0However, the behavior itself is not harmful on
\nits own; it is the persistence and compulsion to do the specific behavior that
\ncauses it to reach the level of addiction. Examples of this include exercising
\nand shopping which are both very normal and appropriate behaviors. When these
\nbehaviors become addictive they no longer act in positive ways in our lives and
\nthey actually become harmful.<\/p>\n

Addiction to exercise can create metabolic imbalances and potential long term damage to
\nthe body. Shopping addictions can lead to financial ruin not to mention the
\nrelationships that can and will be destroyed because of the results of the compulsive
\nbehavior.<\/p>\n

Having an addition is not a sign of weakness, lack of willpower or even a lack of understanding. While some people with addictions
\nare in denial, most realize what they are doing is not healthy and they hide
\ntheir behavior from friends and family. Learning that there are resources such
\nas life and recovery coaches and addiction specialists that can help you when
\nbehavior become compulsive and destructive is the first step in making changes
\nto get your life back on a positive and healthy track.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
