Becoming aware of the gravity<br \/>\nof addiction to gambling can help bring awareness to a disease that affects a<br \/>\nhigh percentage of people causing dire consequences. Some of the statistics<br \/>\nregarding gambling addiction can be startling. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&nbsp;85%<br \/>\nof adults in the United States have gambled at least once in their lives.<\/li>\n<li>15<br \/>\nmillion people show signs of having a gambling addiction.<\/li>\n<li>Gamblers<br \/>\nthat have a household income less than $10,000 bet three times on the<br \/>\nlottery compared to individuals with a household income over $50,000.<\/li>\n<li>65%<br \/>\nof gamblers commit crimes to support their gambling habit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;The ways that an addict can support their gambling addiction<br \/>\ncan be in the form of standard casinos to lotto tickets, bingo halls and 50\/50<br \/>\nraffles. The concept of gambling just a little bit is non-existent for an<br \/>\nindividual suffering with an addiction. The desire to for that big win will<br \/>\ntake over the brain of the addict, creating situations where the addict will<br \/>\nnot know when to stop. Unlike an addiction to drugs and alcohol, the symptoms<br \/>\nof a gambling addiction are not always physically apparent. The consequences of<br \/>\na gambling addiction can be extremely devastating. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;It is not uncommon for gambling addicts to spend beyond<br \/>\ntheir means. Doing so can result in being unable to pay bills, having utilities<br \/>\nshut off, losing a home and engaging in criminal activities to support the<br \/>\ngambling addiction. Funds that are being saved for necessities end up being<br \/>\nspent on the latest game, the fastest dog, the horse that can never lose, the<br \/>\nnumbers that are sure to win and the slot machine that is just warmed up. The<br \/>\nslope from enjoying a game of chance can easily become so slick that an addict<br \/>\nends up at the bottom. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;Programs and fellowships exist that can aid an individual<br \/>\nthat thinks they may have an addiction.
