{"id":717,"date":"2011-09-09T09:51:30","date_gmt":"2011-09-09T13:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/the_prophet_of_pop\/?p=717"},"modified":"2011-09-09T09:51:30","modified_gmt":"2011-09-09T13:51:30","slug":"more-on-911-and-lives-overcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/the_prophet_of_pop\/2011\/09\/more-on-911-and-lives-overcome.html","title":{"rendered":"More on 9\/11 and Live&#8217;s &#8220;Overcome&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/beliefnetmusic\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Click here to follow Beliefnet Music on Twitter!<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<iframe title=\"Overcome - Performed by Ed Kowalczyk (a cappella)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AGpKL0LB1_o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>On the main website I wrote an article about Steven Rosenbaum, the director of the 9\/11 video for Live&#8217;s song &#8220;Overcome.&#8221; \u00a0If you haven&#8217;t seen it, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/9_11Anniversary\/gallery.aspx?p=7\" target=\"_blank\">check it out here<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0I was pretty happy with it, which doesn&#8217;t happen often! \u00a0As usual, there was some stuff left on the cutting room floor, so I thought it would be interesting to share it here.<\/p>\n<p>This bit picks up after Steven and crew had shot the video and it was showing on MTV and VH1. \u00a0They didn&#8217;t yet know if it was alright for them to do it, and the response to it was unprecedented. \u00a0Steven described it in great detail. \u00a0Enjoy!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThen 2 or 3 more days went by, and I remember people in the office asking \u201cdid we have permission to do that\u201d?\u00a0 Since it wasn&#8217;t our music, and I said \u201cyou know what, I don&#8217;t care, I had to get it out, I had to say it.\u201d\u00a0 So, three days go by and I get a call from the manager of Live, and \u201cI said here it comes, you know we&#8217;re going to sue you.\u201d\u00a0 Their manager paused for about 4 seconds, and he said \u201cwe&#8217;re just so honored that you used our music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother week goes by and he calls back and he says they want to shoot a video using the footage in LA, and I said \u201cno.\u201d\u00a0 He said \u201cLet me get this straight you can use our music but we can&#8217;t use your footage?\u201d\u00a0 I said \u201cIf Ed wants to record a song about the trade centers he has to come to NY.\u201d\u00a0 He called back an hour later and \u201calright we&#8217;re going to be on a plane today.\u201d\u00a0 He flew to NY, we walked down the West Side highway and we brought a boom box so that he could sing to the pre-recorded music.\u00a0 There were people from the label and us, just this big group of people.\u00a0 We got as far as the sanitation trucks [near Ground Zero], and the police officer stopped us, and said you guys don&#8217;t have press credentials.\u00a0 [After some negotiating] Ed, me, my wife who was filming, and one other were allowed in. \u00a0He left behind all the handlers, all the agency people.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later we are standing with the buildings in the background in a place that people weren&#8217;t allowed to go at that point.\u00a0 In front of the burning smoking ruins Ed sang the song a capella.\u00a0 It was incredibly haunting, incredibly beautiful.<strong> <\/strong>\u00a0You know, it is one of those stories 9\/11 is a terrible, terrible thing.\u00a0 Nobody would wish that it happened, but in addition to that, I met some amazing people, Ed, he&#8217;s one of them.\u00a0 He was really frankly thankful that I called him out and said don&#8217;t sit on the west coast.\u00a0 He did the right thing, got on a plane, and it wasn&#8217;t a time when people were looking forward to air travel.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Really powerful stuff!! \u00a0Thanks again to Steven Rosenbaum for being generous with his time and extremely helpful. \u00a0Great guy!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/9_11Anniversary\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Check out more September 11th coverage at Beliefnet!<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click here to follow Beliefnet Music on Twitter!
