Jay Leno has always brought laughter to millions, but today, it\u2019s his quiet faithfulness at home that\u2019s inspiring hearts across the country.<\/p>\n

The 74-year-old comedian and former Tonight Show<\/em> host has been married to his wife, Mavis, since 1980. Now, after 45 years of marriage, he\u2019s walking through the most challenging chapter yet: caring for her as she battles advanced dementia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you get married, you take a vow \u2014 will I live up to this?\u201d Leno said in a recent interview on In Depth with Graham Bensinger.<\/em> \u201cOr will I be like a sleazy guy, if something happens to my wife, I\u2019m out banging the cashier at the mini-mart? No, I didn\u2019t. I enjoy the time with my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jay was granted legal conservatorship over Mavis last year, following her diagnosis of a \u201cmajor neurocognitive disorder.\u201d According to court documents, her condition had been worsening for years, and at times she no longer recognized her own husband. Still, Leno has never wavered in his commitment to her care.<\/p>\n

\u201cI go home, I cook dinner for her, watch TV. It\u2019s OK. It\u2019s basically what we did before, except now I have to feed her and do all the things. But I like it. I like taking care of her,\u201d he shared. \u201cShe\u2019s a very independent person, and I like that I\u2019m needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leno admits the daily demands are hard. \u201cWhen you have to feed someone and change them, carry them to the bathroom\u2026 it\u2019s a challenge,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not that I enjoy doing it, but I guess I enjoy doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even in the midst of difficulty, Jay finds ways to laugh. One of his favorite moments is using flashcards with pictures to help jog Mavis\u2019s memory. \u201cI go, \u2018Honey, that\u2019s President Obama. Remember we had dinner?\u2019 She goes, \u2018Oh, not me.\u2019 I go, \u2018Yeah, honey, it was you\u2026 We went to the White House!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Leno reflected on the growth of their love through adversity: \u201cWe\u2019ve been married 45 years. The first 40 \u2014 unbelievable. The last five have been challenging. I think there\u2019s more love now. Because, why am I doing this? Well, this is why.\u201d<\/p>\n

That \u201cwhy\u201d is rooted in something deeper than romance\u2014it\u2019s about the kind of selfless love Scripture speaks of: \u201cLove bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things\u201d<\/em> (1 Corinthians 13:7).<\/p>\n

\u201cAt some point in my life, I\u2019m going to be called upon to defend myself, stand up,\u201d Leno said. \u201cI think that\u2019s really what defines a marriage. That\u2019s really what love is. That\u2019s what you do. I\u2019m glad I didn\u2019t cut and run. I\u2019m glad I didn\u2019t run off with some woman half my age or any of that silly nonsense. I would rather be with her than doing something else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jay closed with a powerful tribute: \u201cI married the person that had the ideals I wish I had.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a world that often trades commitment for convenience, Jay Leno\u2019s devotion reminds us that true love is tested in the hard times and made stronger by them.<\/p>\n
