Meghan Markle\u00a0offered a little insight into the gendered reaction she faced after she and\u00a0Prince Harry\u00a0announced their engagement in 2017. On her Spotify podcast, \u201cArchetypes,\u201d the Duchess of Sussex told guest Mindy Kaling, \u201cEveryone was just like, \u2018Oh, my God, you\u2019re so lucky he chose you.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continued before praising Harry, whom she married in 2018, \u201cAnd at a certain point, after you hear it a million times over, you\u2019re like, \u2018Well, I chose him, too!\u2019\u201d However, the Duchess said she\u2019s thankful she has a partner fighting that narrative, saying he was lucky because she chose him.<\/p>\n
Meghan added, \u201cBut it is gendered, and it\u2019s archetyped, and it\u2019s stereotyped that \u2018you\u2019re so lucky,\u2019 And it just feeds into this idea that you\u2019re waiting for someone to tell you that you\u2019re good enough, as opposed to knowing that you\u2019re good enough on your own.\u201d<\/p>\n
The interview, which also touches on Kaling\u2019s \u201cjoys, challenges, and stigmas of her life as a single, unmarried woman\u201d and \u201cher decision to start a family on her own,\u201d kicked off with Meghan describing a project she was given on marriage at her private Catholic school.<\/p>\n
