That number rose to 20 percent in eastern Washington, D.C., and 22 percent in central Milwaukee.

Meanwhile, some suburban communities in California, New Jersey and Utah reported married-parent household rates approaching 89 percent.

Here are the areas with the highest percentage of people aged 15-64 who are married.

These marriage gardens are located across six states—Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah. Texas appears three times in the top 10, while Utah and New Jersey each appear twice. They tend to be located in suburban areas.

— The Institute for Family Studies (@FamStudies) October 9, 2026

The study also revealed significant economic and racial differences. Many marriage deserts were concentrated in lower-income, predominantly Black urban neighborhoods, while marriage gardens were more common in wealthier, predominantly white suburbs.

However, researchers emphasized that money alone doesn’t explain why marriage is thriving in some communities and declining in others.

In affluent Manhattan neighborhoods, including Greenwich Village and the Financial District, fewer than 28 percent of householders were married despite relatively high incomes.

“It’s clear that the decision to get married is not just due to financial concerns; it’s also a matter of culture and, admittedly, perhaps a matter of affordability,” IFS research fellow Ken Burchfiel told Fox News Digital.

Researchers cautioned that the study does not establish what causes these differences. Previous research has pointed to unemployment, incarceration and limited economic opportunities as contributing factors in communities with lower marriage rates.

But the findings raise an important question: What does growing up in a community where marriage is rare mean for children?

The researchers pointed to previous studies connecting stable, two-parent households with greater economic mobility and stronger community relationships.

“These children will be observing marriage as a stable, ordinary feature of adult life,” the report explained of children growing up in marriage gardens.

Burchfiel believes marriage and parenthood also encourage people to put others first.

“Marriage and raising kids are both parts of your life that really force you to kind of die to yourself and live for others,” he said.

He encouraged communities to promote stronger families through better employment opportunities and education that emphasizes finishing school, finding stable work and marrying before having children.

For Christians, the findings underscore the importance of supporting marriages, encouraging parents and creating communities where families can flourish.

While the statistics reveal a significant divide, they also highlight an opportunity for churches and communities to invest in relationships, mentor young couples and help families build lasting foundations.

Marriage is becoming increasingly rare in some of America’s largest cities, with a new study revealing that fewer than one in five households with children are headed by married couples in certain neighborhoods.
