They first met as teenagers in a McDonald’s parking lot in West Monroe, Louisiana. Al was 17 and Lisa was 15. They married in 1984 and later welcomed two daughters while Robertson pursued ministry work as a pastor.

But behind the scenes, both carried deep wounds.

Robertson admitted he failed to make Lisa feel included and supported during the early years of their marriage.

“To be quite honest with you, I made a huge mistake in not pulling Lisa in as a partner in what we were doing, in my career and my dreams,” he said. “I just didn’t recognize it. I didn’t see it.”

Lisa revealed that much of her struggle stemmed from childhood trauma.

“From an early age, at age 7, I was subjected to someone molesting me,” she shared. “I believe that at age 7, I began to be dishonest with who I was and what I was.”

Years later, an old boyfriend contacted her, leading to an affair that nearly destroyed their marriage. Lisa admitted she constantly prayed no one would discover the truth.

“I had prayed all through this affair that God would open a door for me to walk away and that nobody would ever find out because I didn’t want to hurt Alan,” she said.

Eventually, Robertson uncovered the affair through cellphone records, and the couple separated temporarily. At first, he believed the marriage was likely over.

“I was just not sure if I could ever fully trust again,” he admitted.

But everything changed during a deeply emotional moment Lisa describes as her spiritual turning point. Alone in her backyard, she cried out to God for forgiveness and surrender.

“Once I turned my life over to the Lord… He came and met me right there in the backyard,” she said. “He came, and He rescued me.”

Lisa said that experience led her to radically change her life. She pursued counseling, surrounded herself with strong Christian women, and committed herself fully to God and her marriage.

“The first thing was that I cried out to God,” she explained. “The second thing was to surround myself [with those women]. But then also the third thing was counseling.”

Robertson said seeing his wife’s genuine transformation softened his own heart. He also acknowledged that earlier in their relationship, he had been unfaithful to Lisa — and she had forgiven him.

“I think out of my own appreciation for not only what God had done for me, but also what Lisa had done for me, it gave me that capacity to forgive infidelity,” he said.

The couple renewed their vows in December 1999 and have since spent years speaking publicly about marriage restoration and God’s grace.

Today, they say honesty remains the foundation of their relationship.

“To have a really strong and very intimate marriage… there has to be honesty,” Lisa said. “Honesty is the most important thing that you can do to have a very successful marriage.”

Their story serves as a reminder that while betrayal can deeply wound a marriage, healing, forgiveness, and restoration are still possible through faith, humility, and hard work.

“Duck Dynasty” star Al Robertson is opening up about one of the darkest seasons of his marriage — and why he believes faith and forgiveness can restore even the most broken relationships.
