Former President Barack Obama is opening up about the strain politics has placed on his marriage to Michelle Obama, admitting that his continued involvement in public life during President Donald Trump\u2019s presidency has caused \u201cgenuine tension\u201d at home.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with The New Yorker<\/em> published May 4, Obama acknowledged that his wife would rather see him slow down and enjoy more private time together after years in the spotlight.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives,\u201d Obama said. \u201cIt does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former president explained that he originally intended to follow the traditional path of former presidents by largely staying out of political battles after leaving office. Early in Trump\u2019s first term, Obama mostly remained quiet publicly. But over time, he said he felt compelled to speak out more often because of concerns over Trump\u2019s leadership and policy decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople aren\u2019t looking at me in historical comparison to other presidents,\u201d Obama told the magazine. \u201cThey don\u2019t care about the fact that no other ex-president was the main surrogate for the party for four election cycles after they left office.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the interview, Obama believed Trump\u2019s \u201crecklessness\u201d pushed him back into the political arena more than he had planned. Over the years, Obama has criticized Trump on issues ranging from withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate agreement to efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, one of the signature achievements of Obama\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis opposition to Trump has spurred Obama to delve back into politics \u2018more than I would have preferred,\u2019\u201d the article noted.<\/p>\n

In recent months, Obama has remained active online and politically engaged. One of his most visible efforts came during Virginia\u2019s redistricting debate, where he urged voters on X to support a ballot measure favoring Democratic congressional maps. His posts generated hundreds of millions of views and featured strongly partisan language.<\/p>\n

\u201cFree and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy,\u201d Obama wrote in one March post. \u201cBut right now, they\u2019re under attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michelle Obama has also become increasingly vocal in public discussions about politics and culture, often sharing her views through podcasts and interviews.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time the former president has spoken publicly about challenges in their marriage. In 2025, Obama admitted he had been \u201cdigging myself out of the hole I found myself in with Michelle\u201d after she skipped several major public appearances, including former President Jimmy Carter\u2019s funeral and Trump\u2019s second inauguration.<\/p>\n
