{"id":677,"date":"2009-02-02T08:00:54","date_gmt":"2009-02-02T08:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/stevenwaldman\/2009\/02\/charles-darwin-believer-in-int.html"},"modified":"2009-02-02T08:00:54","modified_gmt":"2009-02-02T08:00:54","slug":"charles-darwin-believer-in-int","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/stevenwaldman\/2009\/02\/charles-darwin-believer-in-int.html","title":{"rendered":"Charles Darwin, Believer in Intelligent Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From today&#8217;s New York Times Book Review comes two interesting morsels about Charles Darwin that ought to slightly soften Christian antagonism to him as the destroyer of faith.<br \/>\nOne new book,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/01\/books\/review\/Benfey-t.html?_r=1&amp;ref=books\"> &#8220;Darwin&#8217;s Sacred Cause: How a Hatred of Slavery Shaped Darwin&#8217;s Views on Human Evolution,&#8221; <\/a>argues that his abolitionist sentiment drove him toward a &#8220;belief in blood kinship, a &#8216;common descent'&#8221; of all human beings. If we all come from the same place, we cannot claim one human to being superior and capable of enslaving another.<br \/>\nAnother review (of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/01\/books\/review\/Applegate-t.html?ref=books\">Banquet at Delmonicos<\/a>) highlighted the existence of the &#8220;Deistic Darwinians.&#8221;  These would include Charles Kingsley, who responded to Origin of Species by writing: &#8220;We know of old that God was so wise that he could make all things ; but behold, he is so much wiser than even that, that he can make all things make themselves.&#8221;<br \/>\nResponding to another friend, Asa Gray, who had made a similar defense, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/stream\/famousmenofscien00boltiala\/famousmenofscien00boltiala_djvu.txt\">Darwin himself wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one ; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms, most beautiful and most wonderful, have been and are being evolved.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written before that <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/stevenwaldman\/2008\/03\/thomas-jefferson-believer-in-i.html\">Thomas Jefferson believed in intelligent design<\/a>.
