For many people the effects of the weak economy had been felt long before that.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsnet5.com\/health\/18000875\/detail.html\">Here&#8217;s the most striking example: <\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>New government figures show that almost 700,000 children went hungry in the United States at some point in 2007, up more than 50 percent from the year before to mark the highest point since 1998.
