{"id":997,"date":"2012-07-17T19:00:19","date_gmt":"2012-07-17T23:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=997"},"modified":"2012-07-12T12:29:45","modified_gmt":"2012-07-12T16:29:45","slug":"the-difference-between-ignorant-and-stupid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2012\/07\/the-difference-between-ignorant-and-stupid.html","title":{"rendered":"The Difference Between Ignorant and Stupid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you know the difference between being ignorant and being just plain stupid?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t make a practice of calling people either one, although I know those who, by definition, are both.\u00a0 According to Merriam-Webster&#8217;s Collegiate Dictionary\u00a0one who considered ignorant is, &#8216;lacking knowledge or comprehension of a\u00a0specified thing.\u00a0 \u00a0It also implies a lack of understanding or awareness of a certain topic or idea&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I am ignorant of modern mathematics and nuclear physics.\u00a0 That doesn&#8217;t mean I am a stupid person, I just have do knowledge or expertise in these areas of study.\u00a0 I also am very electronically challenged.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t like my computer and don&#8217;t even know the difference between an ipad and a notebook.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t understand gigabytes and CD Roms.\u00a0 But, I m not a stupid individual.<\/p>\n<p>Now, being stupid is a whole other matter.\u00a0 According to the same dictionary, stupid means,&#8221; slow of mind, given to unintelligent decisions, acting in a careless manner, unreasonable thinking, and making poor choices&#8221;.\u00a0 I have also heard it said that a stupid person is one who continues to do the same thing over and over, but expects a different result.\u00a0 To change the results you are having, you must change the way you are doing things.<\/p>\n<p>If I keep eating bags of candy, I will get fat.\u00a0 If I run across the ice, I probably will fall and break something.\u00a0 If I don&#8217;t pay my electric bill, they will turn off my power.\u00a0 These are all stupid choices; but to change those results I have to change my actions.\u00a0 I should stop eating too much candy, walk carefully across the ice, and pay the electric bill.<\/p>\n<p>Some people have medical or emotional reasons for making bad choices, others are just stupid.\u00a0 God gives us each a mind to think clearly.
