{"id":914,"date":"2011-12-13T19:00:36","date_gmt":"2011-12-14T00:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=914"},"modified":"2011-12-12T17:29:18","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T22:29:18","slug":"the-secret-of-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/12\/the-secret-of-christmas.html","title":{"rendered":"The Secret of Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We make Christmas to so many things that it is not.\u00a0 It can become the most frustrating time of the year instead of the most wonderful time of the year.\u00a0 But, Christmas isn&#8217;t candy canes and popcorn put on strings.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t mounds of presents and twinkling lights on every tree in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas isn&#8217;t about all the cookies we bake and share with others.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t about the carollers outside your window or the snowman in the front yard.\u00a0 That little gift you give on Christmas Day cannot mend a broken heart.\u00a0 It cannot erase harsh words that have past from your lips.\u00a0 It cannot make up for all the times throughout the year when you were rude to the mailman.\u00a0 One day, no matter what day it is, can&#8217;t wash away all the hurts\u00a0 we have inflicted or experienced throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>May I suggest that we should do these random acts of kindness any time during the year.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t have to wait for Christmas to be generous to our waitress or to bring some groceries to a friend in need.\u00a0 We can offer words of encouragement everyday.\u00a0 We can speak in love instead of anger.\u00a0 We can hug the unhuggable and smile at the stranger in the grocery line.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we should take a closer look at the things that make the Christmas season so special to us.\u00a0 The things that make us feel good then, would make us feel good anytime.\u00a0 Cookies aren&#8217;t only for the holidays.\u00a0 Small token of love or appreciation can be given whenever your heart feels grateful.<\/p>\n<p>Sending cards of encouragement is something I try to do all year.\u00a0 There is always someone who needs to know they have a friend who is praying for them.\u00a0 It only takes a few minutes and it can mean so much to the person on the receiving end.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an old Christmas song that Bing Crosby sang that says, &#8220;&#8230;it&#8217;s not the things we do on Christmas Day, but the Christmas things we do all year through&#8221;.\u00a0 I tend to agree with that thinking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We make Christmas to so many things that it is not.\u00a0 It can become the most frustrating time of the year instead of the most wonderful time of the year.\u00a0 But, Christmas isn&#8217;t candy canes and popcorn put on strings.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t mounds of presents and twinkling lights on every tree in the neighborhood.
