{"id":848,"date":"2011-12-07T19:00:32","date_gmt":"2011-12-08T00:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=848"},"modified":"2012-09-19T15:17:38","modified_gmt":"2012-09-19T19:17:38","slug":"the-last-rose-of-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/12\/the-last-rose-of-summer.html","title":{"rendered":"The Last Rose of Summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I love my roses, especially the sweet smelling ones.\u00a0 Often when they try to make hybred types, like purple and black roses, the flower loses its fragrance.\u00a0 I like the unusual colors, but the fragrance is what is best.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is one of the last roses from this summer.\u00a0 We actually picked and put it on the table for Thanksgiving.\u00a0 This bush produces roses all summer from early June until we get a killing freeze.\u00a0 Because it is planted close to the house,\u00a0it blooms even longer than most.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We are a little like roses.\u00a0 When we try to change ourselves into something God\u00a0never meant us to be, we can lose our &#8220;spiritual&#8221; fragrance.\u00a0 God has made each of us according to His perfect design, so why do we think we can improve on His work?\u00a0 We look in the mirror and think, &#8216;my nose is too big, I think I&#8217;ll fix it&#8217;; or, &#8216;my hair is too gray, so I better color it quickly&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe that red rose doesn&#8217;t like being red.\u00a0 I have one in the front of my house that was red and they changed it to purple.\u00a0 It is a lovely rose, but has no fragrance at all.\u00a0 This year all the purple roses died and it had red ones on the stems.\u00a0 The red ones smelled wonderful, but I had to trim the bush right above the graft to keep getting purple flowers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As Christians, we don&#8217;t have to choose between inner beauty and outward appearance.\u00a0 We can really have both.\u00a0 I trick is to find out where your inner beauty lies and cultivate\u00a0 it.\u00a0 We can maintain our spiritual &#8220;fragrance&#8221; by being the best we can be in our destiny in God.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It also merits mentioning that the bushes that are closest to the house, live longer and\u00a0produce more blooms.
