{"id":718,"date":"2011-11-03T19:00:27","date_gmt":"2011-11-03T23:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=718"},"modified":"2011-11-03T09:32:10","modified_gmt":"2011-11-03T13:32:10","slug":"hunger-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/11\/hunger-in-america.html","title":{"rendered":"Hunger in America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can it be true that in this land of promise and plenty there actually are people who do not get enough to eat?\u00a0 Statistics show that one out of every six people are hungry.\u00a0 One out of four are under the age of six.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t mean that they are starving, but they are not getting proper nutrition or don&#8217;t eat three meals a day.\u00a0 Maybe they don&#8217;t eat every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Many low income families can&#8217;t afford to feed their children.\u00a0 Food stamps will only stretch so far\u00a0and most food pantries you can only visit once a month.\u00a0 Consequently, people buy what is cheapest without regard to nutritional value.\u00a0 They buy hot dogs instead of chicken, and processed foods instead of fresh produce.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The thing that bothers me, is at the same time these people are going hungry, we as a nation are throwing away thousands of pounds of food every day.\u00a0 I live in a farming community and see first hand some of the waste.\u00a0 Many farmers only pick their fields once.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That means the rest of the crop lays in the fields rotting.\u00a0 Field after field of tomatoes and cabbage go to waste.\u00a0 In Florida they threw away thousands of strawberries in order to keep the price high enough for the farmers to make a profit.\u00a0 We see bushels of peaches and apples left hanging on the trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My son works for a big snack food company, and they throw boxes and boxes of snacks away every day.\u00a0 If the sell by date is expired, out they go.\u00a0 Anyone knows that these items are safe to eat for months after that date, unfortunately they can&#8217;t give them away unless it&#8217;s to a non-profit organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I have seen people digging through the dumpsters outside the grocery stores.\u00a0 If they get caught someone will chase them away.\u00a0 In the bigger cities you see people holding signs that say &#8220;Will work for food&#8221;.\u00a0 When I see this, I usually give them a sack of groceries.\u00a0 Most people are&#8217;t going to ask a stranger back to their home to do some work.\u00a0 These people are trying to make their own way and earn their food.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The problem isn&#8217;t really a shortage of food.\u00a0 We just don&#8217;t have a system to get the extra food to the people who need it most.\u00a0 Churches and food pantries do what they can, but still there is a huge gap between what is needed and what is available.\u00a0 I hope some day soon there is a plan in place to distribute our excess to families in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As our economy grows worse, so does the hunger problem.\u00a0 I guess only God knows the answer, but I sure wish He would\u00a0 tell someone what can be done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can it be true that in this land of promise and plenty there actually are people who do not get enough to eat?\u00a0 Statistics show that one out of every six people are hungry.\u00a0 One out of four are under the age of six.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t mean that they are starving, but they are&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[33,43,35],"class_list":["post-718","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-or-feature","tag-foods","tag-news","tag-unbelievable"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
