{"id":706,"date":"2011-10-30T19:00:13","date_gmt":"2011-10-30T23:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=706"},"modified":"2011-10-30T19:16:09","modified_gmt":"2011-10-30T23:16:09","slug":"season-of-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/10\/season-of-fear.html","title":{"rendered":"Season of Fear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Halloween is a time when ghosts and goblins roam freely across our nation.\u00a0 Most people have little or no knowledge of how it started or what they\u00a0are celebrating.\u00a0 We know it is called Satan&#8217;s holiday.\u00a0\u00a0 It has always been about the dark side of things.\u00a0 With all the scary costumes, horror movies,\u00a0haunted houses, and jack-o-lanterns.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When I was young Halloween was much different.\u00a0 We could go trick or treating for 3 evenings in a row.\u00a0 It was always dark outside and we didn&#8217;t need a parent to look after us.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t go to the store\u00a0 for\u00a0 our costumes we made are own.\u00a0 My mom made a black\u00a0 cat costume, complete with a tail.\u00a0 We always fought over that one.\u00a0 Other favorites were; a bum, a princess, and a\u00a0circus clown.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We grabbed a flashlight and off we went.\u00a0 We would head in\u00a0different direction each night, so we could get the most candy possible.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t worry about apples with razor blades inside, or candy that had been tampered with.\u00a0 We never thought about someone kidnapping us.\u00a0 The worst prank my friends\u00a0 and\u00a0 I did was soap the neighbors windows.\u00a0 Our\u00a0 horror movies were\u00a0 Frankenstein and The Birds.\u00a0 We were encouraged to make happy expressions on our jack-o-lanterns.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0Now people spend their hard earned money to get the perfect costume for little Mary.\u00a0 There is no creativity needed, just buy what you want.\u00a0 Unfortunately,\u00a0 you might have 6 Batmans and they all look exactly alike. Where&#8217;s the fun it that?\u00a0 Today the children try to make the most\u00a0develish expressions on their jack-o-lanterns.\u00a0 Some play some nasty tricks, even on their friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We send our children out in groups, with adult supervision, because of all the real scary people out there.\u00a0 They assign 1 night for trick or treating and it is during daylight hours.\u00a0 Most of the horror films are really HORRIBLE; complete with blood and guts,\u00a0ax murders vampires, and werewolves.\u00a0 Almost every town has their own haunted house and parents have to check through the children&#8217;s treats to make sure they are safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Whether or not you, as a Christian, choose to celebrate Halloween is purely a personal conviction.\u00a0 Many go all out to celebrate the holiday.\u00a0 Others stay away from it completely, regarding it as a satanic practice.\u00a0\u00a0 Still others adjust the activities so the\u00a0 costumes are not\u00a0 scary and plan Harvest parties or Trick or Trunk Night.\u00a0 This way the children can still have their fun and candy, but in a safe way.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Today is Halloween, so celebrate it however you choose and try not to be judgemental of others who have\u00a0a different way celebrating the holiday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Halloween is a time when ghosts and goblins roam freely across our nation.\u00a0 Most people have little or no knowledge of how it started or what they\u00a0are celebrating.\u00a0 We know it is called Satan&#8217;s holiday.\u00a0\u00a0 It has always been about the dark side of things.\u00a0 With all the scary costumes, horror movies,\u00a0haunted houses, and&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36,27],"tags":[22,25,46],"class_list":["post-706","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-just-for-fun","category-news-or-feature","tag-back-in-time","tag-children","tag-holiday"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
