{"id":659,"date":"2011-10-24T19:00:18","date_gmt":"2011-10-24T23:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=659"},"modified":"2011-10-24T15:04:17","modified_gmt":"2011-10-24T19:04:17","slug":"youthful-wisdom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/10\/youthful-wisdom.html","title":{"rendered":"Youthful Wisdom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kyle Overmyer is the youngest sheriff in the state of Ohio.\u00a0 He is only 38 years old, but that doesn&#8217;t mean that he lacks motivation or wisdom.\u00a0 When he took office he was told to &#8220;trim&#8221; the budget.\u00a0 He found a creative way\u00a0to do just that.\u00a0 In 2009, the food budget for the Sandusky County Jail was $120,000.\u00a0 This year it was $88,000.<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/files\/2011\/10\/KOvermyer0011_pp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-668\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/259\/2011\/10\/KOvermyer0011_pp-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The inmates used to get pancakes, sweetened\u00a0cereal, and sometimes breakfast meat.\u00a0 They also had\u00a0hot\u00a0 lunches and dinners with all kinds of meats and trimmings.\u00a0Now they get cereal for breakfast, a sack lunch for lunch and a good hot meal for dinner,\u00a0 but no red meat.\u00a0 Of course the inmates were not thrilled with this change, but Sheriff Overmyer tells them, &#8220;This is not a party and this is not a hotel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff Overmyer is a tax payer&#8217;s hero.\u00a0 It all began with a simple idea and has blossomed into a program that has been a real money saver.\u00a0 Many other counties and states are looking to pattern a program like this.\u00a0 The idea was to plant a garden near the jail and have the low level offenders work the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Overmyer said the garden is aimed at partly rehabilitation and partly to save money. &#8220;It helps the jail, the inmates, and the taxpayers.\u00a0 It&#8217;is a win-win operation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first garden was planted in the spring of 2009 and the sheriff actually helped plant the seed.\u00a0 Since then it has grown to a 1.5 acre plot. Many inmates come in with the attitude that we owe it to them to provide what they need, including food, and we do.
