{"id":416,"date":"2011-08-31T20:32:38","date_gmt":"2011-09-01T00:32:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=416"},"modified":"2011-08-31T20:32:38","modified_gmt":"2011-09-01T00:32:38","slug":"summers-almost-gone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/08\/summers-almost-gone.html","title":{"rendered":"Summer&#8217;s Almost Gone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Labor Day is just around the corner and with it comes the traditional ending of the summer season.\u00a0 Although the calendar doesn&#8217;t say it&#8217;s officially fall yet, for all practical purposes summer is over.\u00a0 Many local pools and tourist attractions close for the year.\u00a0 The kids all go back to school.\u00a0 Collage students begin another chapter of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I love to watch the changing of the seasons.\u00a0 That&#8217;s one of the reasons I keep living in Ohio.\u00a0 The leaves haven&#8217;t started to change their colors, but when they do, they are gorgeous!\u00a0 I love the brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows.\u00a0 I love to watch the squirrels and chipmunks scurry around gathering food for the winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I usually decorate my house with pumpkins and gourds, scarecrows and little woodland creatures.\u00a0 We have some rather annoying crows living next door.\u00a0 I wonder if I could hire them to sit on my porch railing and greet our guests?\u00a0 They might be an unusual decoration and the talk of the neighborhood, but their loud caws are not helpful when taking an afternoon nap.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I remember when I was young we used to rake up the fallen leaves, jump and scatter the piles, rake then up again and burn them on the roadside.\u00a0 What a wonderful smell they produced.\u00a0 Now days one can&#8217;t burn outside, especially in town.\u00a0 I&#8217;m afraid those days are gone forever, although once in a while, when out in the country I get to experience that smell.\u00a0 In some counties in Ohio farmers can still burn brush piles, so I get the fragrance of leaves burning.\u00a0 It always carries me back to my childhood memories of fall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Labor Day is just around the corner and with it comes the traditional ending of the summer season.\u00a0 Although the calendar doesn&#8217;t say it&#8217;s officially fall yet, for all practical purposes summer is over.\u00a0 Many local pools and tourist attractions close for the year.\u00a0 The kids all go back to school.\u00a0 Collage students begin&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36,30],"tags":[21],"class_list":["post-416","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-just-for-fun","category-memories","tag-nature"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
