{"id":299,"date":"2011-08-10T20:21:37","date_gmt":"2011-08-11T00:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=299"},"modified":"2011-08-10T20:21:37","modified_gmt":"2011-08-11T00:21:37","slug":"what-were-they-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/08\/what-were-they-thinking.html","title":{"rendered":"What Were They Thinking?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have you seen the recent television commercial for AT&amp;T movie downloads?\u00a0 It shows a family, parents and two children.\u00a0 The children are both under 12 years old, or so it would seem.\u00a0 They sit on the sofa listening to their parents.\u00a0 There is only one movie download left and they are about to\u00a0decide who gets to\u00a0choose it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The little girl is pretty, with long beautiful hair.\u00a0 She looks as if she has been sitting on the sofa all day trying to keep her posture perfect.\u00a0 The smaller boy has a mountain of unruly curls and you can tell he has been playing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 First they talk about the\u00a0\u00a0wonderful attributes of their daughter.\u00a0 Then they decide their son should get some credit for his curls.\u00a0 Next they are loudly proclaiming that they both love their daughter more, so she should get to choose the movie.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Shame on you AT&amp;T!\u00a0 You should know better.\u00a0 What is this telling children across America?\u00a0 It is not okay to love one child more than another.\u00a0 It is not okay to make fun of their hair.\u00a0 It is not okay to have this kind of conversation in front of our children!\u00a0 I know some families do have these kinds of conversations, but PLEASE do it behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How we expect the next generation to grow up with confidence\u00a0if we tear them apart so openly?\u00a0\u00a0 Parents are supposed to love and nurture all their children.\u00a0 We are to teach them right from wrong and how to be kind to one another.\u00a0 Parents are to protect their children from the hurtful things they face each day, not be the cause of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We are to raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord.\u00a0 We are to guide them.\u00a0 We are to pray for them and lead them to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Our children are our greatest treasure.\u00a0 They are like jewels in a crown.\u00a0 I know AT&amp;T doesn&#8217;t share these convictions, but couldn&#8217;t they be more sensitive in relating to these young ones?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have you seen the recent television commercial for AT&amp;T movie downloads?\u00a0 It shows a family, parents and two children.\u00a0 The children are both under 12 years old, or so it would seem.\u00a0 They sit on the sofa listening to their parents.\u00a0 There is only one movie download left and they are about to\u00a0decide who&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[29,35],"class_list":["post-299","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-or-feature","tag-family","tag-unbelievable"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>What Were They Thinking?
