{"id":295,"date":"2011-08-10T11:34:55","date_gmt":"2011-08-10T15:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=295"},"modified":"2011-08-10T11:34:55","modified_gmt":"2011-08-10T15:34:55","slug":"too-much-stuff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/08\/too-much-stuff.html","title":{"rendered":"Too Much Stuff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People in America seem to think that we are entitled to be happy and satisfied all the time.\u00a0 We buy bigger houses, faster cars, new clothes and furniture, and so much more.\u00a0 We just have to have the latest electronic gadget or game system.\u00a0 Maybe a nice trip to the Bahamas or an Alaskan cruise would make us feel better.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do things really bring us happiness and contentment?\u00a0 Can lots of money give us peace at night?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can stuff, stuff, and more stuff make us more ready for the Kingdom of God?\u00a0 We already have so much to be thankful for, yet we are thankful for so little.\u00a0 I wonder how God feels when He sees His children chasing after such meaningless things.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I like nice things too.\u00a0 However, I already have too much stuff.\u00a0 I have more clothes than 3 people need.\u00a0 I own like 6 coats and probably\u00a0 10 pairs of shoes.\u00a0 I think there is a limit to how much we should indulge ourselves.\u00a0 Could our extra money be spent better elsewhere?\u00a0 Our answers will be as different as each of us.\u00a0 Only God can help us figure out what is right for us.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t decide for you and you can&#8217;t decide for me.\u00a0 Maybe you need 6 coats and 10 pairs of shoes to fit your lifestyle.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Matthew 6:19-21 it says, &#8220;Lay not up for yourselves treasure upon the earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt and where\u00a0thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth or rust corrupt, and where no thieves do not break through and steal.\u00a0 For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Treasures we store up in Heaven are things like kindness, caring for the poor, helping children, encouraging a neighbor, visiting someone&#8217;s grandma and so many other simple things we can do every day.\u00a0 And, none of them cost money so we all can afford to do it.\u00a0 God always supplies our needs.\u00a0 He often also gives us many of the desires of our hearts; just because He loves us so much.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s make a conscious choice to be grateful and not greedy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People in America seem to think that we are entitled to be happy and satisfied all the time.\u00a0 We buy bigger houses, faster cars, new clothes and furniture, and so much more.\u00a0 We just have to have the latest electronic gadget or game system.\u00a0 Maybe a nice trip to the Bahamas or an Alaskan&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[34],"class_list":["post-295","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-encouragement","tag-greed-and-entitlement"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
