{"id":276,"date":"2011-08-02T10:17:32","date_gmt":"2011-08-02T14:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=276"},"modified":"2011-08-02T10:17:32","modified_gmt":"2011-08-02T14:17:32","slug":"the-correct-position-for-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/08\/the-correct-position-for-prayer.html","title":{"rendered":"The Correct Position For Prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What should be the proper position of our body when we pray?\u00a0 This is a question I posed to my Sunday School class a few months ago.\u00a0 They are kindergarten and first graders.\u00a0 The unanimous answer was&#8230;.we must bow our heads, fold our hands and close our eyes.\u00a0 This, of course, is what we have all been taught.\u00a0 However, I decided to shake things up a bit.\u00a0 The children were shocked!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Bible says we are to pray without ceasing. (I Thessalonians 5:17)\u00a0 Timothy tells us to pray everywhere. (I Timothy 2:8)\u00a0 That means I can pray at any time and anywhere.\u00a0 The children looked puzzled, so I threw in a few questions for them; can I pray when I&#8217;m driving my car?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can I pray when I&#8217;m at the swimming pool?\u00a0\u00a0Can I pray while I&#8217;m working in the garden or shoveling snow?\u00a0 The children still\u00a0 insisted that one must be a the right bodily\u00a0position to pray.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;You can&#8217;t pray when you&#8217;re driving,&#8221; Sophie said.\u00a0 &#8220;Your eyes would be open.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;You can&#8217;t pray when you&#8217;re swimming,&#8221; Josh insisted. &#8220;There are too many people\u00a0at the pool and they are yelling and splashing around.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;How could you pray when working in the garden?&#8221; Kinsey asked.\u00a0&#8221;\u00a0You can&#8217;t pull weeds with your hands folded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The children still believed that one must\u00a0pray a certain way.\u00a0 After much discussion, they admitted it would be good to pray at the pool, if someone was drowning.\u00a0 God would hear us pray while we are driving, because we might be asking help to avoid an accident.\u00a0 God can hear and answer prayers anywhere and in any way He desires, simply because He is God.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I convinced them that God isn&#8217;t so concerned with the position of our bodies, but rather the position of our hearts.\u00a0 He is everywhere and always ready to hear our prayers.\u00a0 He\u00a0 loves us so much that\u00a0He would listen to our prayers even if we were standing on our heads.( I understand that some children are\u00a0 now saying their bedtime prayers standing on their heads.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Talk about a &#8220;light bulb&#8221;moment.\u00a0 You see it on their little faces, they finally got it.\u00a0 Some adults should be so teachable.\u00a0 We may pray in the church with our heads bowed, eyes closed, and hands folded, but we have anger, greed or unforgiveness in our hearts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We are so entangled in tradition and ritual that we miss the blessing of continued fellowship with our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You tell me, which position is most important to God?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What should be the proper position of our body when we pray?\u00a0 This is a question I posed to my Sunday School class a few months ago.\u00a0 They are kindergarten and first graders.\u00a0 The unanimous answer was&#8230;.we must bow our heads, fold our hands and close our eyes.\u00a0 This, of course, is what we&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[19,32],"class_list":["post-276","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-inspiration","tag-faith","tag-prayer"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
