{"id":243,"date":"2011-08-01T09:24:54","date_gmt":"2011-08-01T13:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=243"},"modified":"2011-07-29T09:27:56","modified_gmt":"2011-07-29T13:27:56","slug":"junk-or-treasures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/08\/junk-or-treasures.html","title":{"rendered":"Junk or Treasures?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One of America&#8217;s greatest past times is\u00a0 going to garage sales.\u00a0 In any given week there can be up to 100 sales just in our small community.\u00a0 This activity seems to be popular with both men and women, although I think the women are more dedicated.\u00a0 The big attraction is finding that one great bargain.\u00a0 It is true that, &#8220;one man&#8217;s junk is another man&#8217;s treasure&#8221;.<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/files\/2011\/07\/IMG_01901.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-251\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/259\/2011\/07\/IMG_01901-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes whole neighborhood will go together and have sales on the same weekend.\u00a0 That way they can share advertising expenses and benefit from people who will go to every sale on the street.\u00a0 We\u00a0 even have a community garage sale.\u00a0 Anyone in Fremont can have a sales without paying permit fees or advertising.\u00a0 That is one crazy weekend!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/files\/2011\/07\/IMG_0191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-250\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/259\/2011\/07\/IMG_0191-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>You can find just about anything at these sales; clothes, tools, kitchen appliances, home decor, lawn care equipment, and some hidden treasures.\u00a0 A few weeks ago, during our community garage sale, I came across the deal of a lifetime.\u00a0 I found a complete antique silver tea set selling for $5.\u00a0 I checked it over and determined that is was actually silver.\u00a0 I wanted to buy it so badly, but\u00a0 I just couldn&#8217;t.\u00a0 I felt like I was being dishonest in taking unfair advantage of this young couple.\u00a0 They obviously didn&#8217;t know the real value of this set.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I spoke with them and told them of a place where they could get a fair appraisal of the tea set.\u00a0 They thanked me for my honesty and I went on to the next sale.\u00a0 I was off to find another deal and I did.\u00a0 I got a Hannah Montana sleeping bag for my grand-daughter for just $2 and a whole pile of old sheets for a dollar.\u00a0 I make handmade crocheted rag rugs from the sheets, so that was quite a deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Garage sales are always fun and you see lots of old friends and make some new ones along the way.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a fun and enjoyable way to spend a few hours searching for treasures.\u00a0 You really should try it sometime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One of America&#8217;s greatest past times is\u00a0 going to garage sales.\u00a0 In any given week there can be up to 100 sales just in our small community.\u00a0 This activity seems to be popular with both men and women, although I think the women are more dedicated.\u00a0 The big attraction is finding that one great&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[31],"class_list":["post-243","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-encouragement","tag-local-activities"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Junk or Treasures?
