{"id":231,"date":"2011-07-28T12:53:47","date_gmt":"2011-07-28T16:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=231"},"modified":"2011-07-27T11:08:58","modified_gmt":"2011-07-27T15:08:58","slug":"the-mystery-of-food-stamps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/07\/the-mystery-of-food-stamps.html","title":{"rendered":"The Mystery of Food Stamps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you have ever had to use food stamps, you will understand my purpose writing this blog.\u00a0 It has been over 30 years since we used them, but some of the same rules apply.\u00a0 I watched is disbelief at the grocery store today.\u00a0 A young man was checking out in front of me and using food stamps.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He bought 3 cases of soda pop, 3 packages of Mondo (glorified kool aid), a bags of candy and a box of sugary cereal.\u00a0 No one questioned his choices or challenged his wisdom.\u00a0 This program is designed to provide food for low income families.\u00a0 You would think they would by food with them.\u00a0 I guess the sugary cereal qualifies as food, but still maybe not the best choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What you can&#8217;t buy with food stamps is dish soap, laundry soap, bath soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, paper towels, any cleaning supplies, or shampoo.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have\u00a0 money for these things, I guess you just stay dirty.\u00a0 How would one find money for these things if they were out of work or at a minimum wage job?\u00a0\u00a0 They can eat their chips and candy and drink their soda pop&#8230;&#8230;.but they sure won&#8217;t smell very good.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe with all the talk in Washington, DC regarding the government entitlement programs, someone could figure out a way so that people can eat healthy foods and still take a shower.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe these people could sit down to dinner with clean clothes on and then wash the dishes when they are finished.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I thank God that I am not dependent on Government programs.\u00a0 God is my source for all things and I know, &#8220;He will supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.&#8221; \u00a0Phil. 4:19<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 However, there are millions of families that desperately need these food stamps, but they also need soap, toothpaste and toilet paper.\u00a0 Is there a way to regulate the program to allow these neccessities of \u00a0life and not allow junk foods and sugary drinks?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you have ever had to use food stamps, you will understand my purpose writing this blog.\u00a0 It has been over 30 years since we used them, but some of the same rules apply.\u00a0 I watched is disbelief at the grocery store today.\u00a0 A young man was checking out in front of me and&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-231","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-or-feature","tag-politics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
