{"id":226,"date":"2011-07-22T10:25:59","date_gmt":"2011-07-22T14:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=226"},"modified":"2011-07-22T10:25:59","modified_gmt":"2011-07-22T14:25:59","slug":"la-cucoracha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/07\/la-cucoracha.html","title":{"rendered":"La Cucoracha"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There I sat in a low-income apartment in the red light district of Cincinnati.\u00a0 The only\u00a0 thing that wasn&#8217;t moving was me.\u00a0 The walls were crawling.\u00a0 The furniture was making me see double.\u00a0 The floors were pulsating like waves on the sea.\u00a0 I think if I had stood up, I would have been easily carried into the next room.\u00a0 My friends and I had gone to this place to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I was a student at God&#8217;s Bible College in Cincinnati.\u00a0 This was our mission field.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The creepy crawling things were cockroaches.\u00a0 There must have been thousands of them.\u00a0 The residents of the apartment acted as if the bugs were part of the home decor.\u00a0 I thought they were disgusting.\u00a0 What was God thinking when He created these horrible creatures?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I understand that the United States was blessed with these little guys in the early 1600&#8217;s, when they were brought over from Africa.\u00a0 They have been tormenting us ever since.\u00a0 The smaller variety live in the northern states and usually are found in unsanitary places, places where they can find food laying around.\u00a0 Their larger cousins, in the southern states, are called palmetto bugs.\u00a0\u00a0 These guys are giants compared to their Ohio kin.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In Mexico they are la cucoracha.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now you can change their size and you can change their name, but you can&#8217;t change what they are.\u00a0 William Shakespeare once said, &#8220;A rose by any other name, would smell as sweet&#8221;.\u00a0 I say a cockroach by any other \u00a0name is still creepy and disgusting.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I know that God&#8217;s word says in Ecclesiastes that everything has a purpose and everything is made beautiful in His time,\u00a0 but I simply can&#8217;t imagine a beautiful cockroach.\u00a0 What could possibly be their purpose in life (other than to creep us out)?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There I sat in a low-income apartment in the red light district of Cincinnati.\u00a0 The only\u00a0 thing that wasn&#8217;t moving was me.\u00a0 The walls were crawling.\u00a0 The furniture was making me see double.\u00a0 The floors were pulsating like waves on the sea.\u00a0 I think if I had stood up, I would have been easily&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[21,6],"class_list":["post-226","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-nature","tag-witnessing"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
