{"id":127,"date":"2011-07-06T13:31:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-06T17:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=127"},"modified":"2011-07-06T13:31:00","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T17:31:00","slug":"the-good-old-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2011\/07\/the-good-old-days.html","title":{"rendered":"The Good Old Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/files\/2011\/07\/IMG_01031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-148\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/259\/2011\/07\/IMG_01031-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> A few weeks ago I had a book signing in a small community nearby.\u00a0 The establishment was called Beeker&#8217;s General Store.\u00a0 When I walked in the front door, it was like going back in time.\u00a0 I mean like 50 years ago, maybe even more.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/files\/2011\/07\/IMG_0107.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-149\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/259\/2011\/07\/IMG_0107-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> There was one wide aisle through the store with mountains of stuff on both sides from the floor to the ceiling.\u00a0 The floors were wooden and well worn.\u00a0\u00a0 They rattled and squeaked with each person that walked in.\u00a0 This store had everything; yard goods,nails, homemade breads and cookies, penny candy(of course it wasn&#8217;t a penny anymore), canning jars, antiques, hand made hankies, and so much more.\u00a0 They even had old hats, gloves, and scarves that would certainly please a fashionable young lady in the forties.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I counted over 75 different old-fashioned candies.\u00a0 They had wax bottles with juice in them, candy cigarettes, Fireballs, Necco wafers, Skybars, Chuckles, button paper, Black Jacks, and edible lipstick.\u00a0 I found Sugar Daddys and Sixlets and so much more.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I remember when I was a kid, many,many years ago, my firend, Judy and I would take my old Radio Flyer wagon all around the neighborhood looking for pop bottles that had been tossed on the roadside.\u00a0 We got 2 cents for a regular glass bottle and a nickle for each quart bottle.\u00a0 There were no plastic bottles back then, they all had return deposits so they could be used again.\u00a0 What a concept.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In an hour or so we had enough bottles to turn in.\u00a0 We walked about 2 miles to the Crossroad Store.\u00a0 There we found many of the same candies that Beeker&#8217;s General Store had.\u00a0 However, this penny candy really was a penny.\u00a0 A full sized candy bar was a nickel.\u00a0 Now the Snickers, Chuckles, Sky Bar and Sugar Daddy go for 85cents.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I know times have changed and prices have gone up, but I certainly enjoyed my little trip to the past.\u00a0 Even if I did spend $5.00 on my penny candy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A few weeks ago I had a book signing in a small community nearby.\u00a0 The establishment was called Beeker&#8217;s General Store.\u00a0 When I walked in the front door, it was like going back in time.\u00a0 I mean like 50 years ago, maybe even more. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There was one wide aisle through the store with&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[22],"class_list":["post-127","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-inspiration","tag-back-in-time"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
