{"id":1241,"date":"2012-04-27T19:15:31","date_gmt":"2012-04-27T23:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=1241"},"modified":"2012-04-26T20:27:16","modified_gmt":"2012-04-27T00:27:16","slug":"honor-your-parents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2012\/04\/honor-your-parents.html","title":{"rendered":"Honor Your Parents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes honoring our parents can be a real challenge.\u00a0 Parents are somewhat like church leader or politicians, they deserve our respect just because of who they are.This is the first commandment that comes with a promise.\u00a0 Exodus 20:12, &#8220;HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER THAT YOUR DAYS MAY BE LONG UPON THE LAND WHICH THE LORD YOUR GOD HAS GIVEN YOU.&#8221;\u00a0 That sounds like a promise for a long life and that&#8217;s a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>There is no such thing as a perfect parent. Babies don&#8217;t come with instruction manuel&#8217;s.\u00a0 Each\u00a0 of us\u00a0do the best we can with the resources made available to us.\u00a0 We all make mistakes, but &#8220;our love will cover a multitude of sins&#8217;.\u00a0 As long as our children know\u00a0they are loved unconditionally, they will honor and respect us.<\/p>\n<p>Too many times parents hurt and abuse their children.\u00a0 It can be physical, mental, or emotional abuse, but they each take there toll on these little lives.\u00a0 When a child lives in this kind of family, it is often difficult to find anything to respect in their parents.\u00a0 Children around the world are tortured, starved, locked away, and sometimes even killed, God say to respect and honor them.<\/p>\n<p>I can speak from personal experience.\u00a0 I was born the fifth child, whom no one wanted in the first place.\u00a0 My dad was an alcoholic and just plain mean sometimes.\u00a0 He only slapped me around a few times, but the mental and emotional abuse was awful.<\/p>\n<p>One day he was mad about something I had done, so he went out and butchered my pet rabbit, Queenie.\u00a0 He as a meat cutter by profession so he cut it up and made Mom roast it for supper.\u00a0 Then he\u00a0forced me to eat my pet through all my gagging and tears.\u00a0 That is cruel.\u00a0 I will never forget that day!<\/p>\n<p>But, God&#8217;s word says we must forgive those who mistreat us, even our parents.\u00a0 It is only when I was able to forgive him for all his cruelty, that I could begin to respect him as a person.\u00a0 He never really changed, but went to his grave as an angry man.<\/p>\n<p>It is only through God&#8217;s grace and love that I was able to forgive my father and release him to God.\u00a0 What he after that was up to him.\u00a0 I have learned to focus on Dad&#8217;s good quailties and search for reasns to honor and respect him<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes honoring our parents can be a real challenge.\u00a0 Parents are somewhat like church leader or politicians, they deserve our respect just because of who they are.This is the first commandment that comes with a promise.\u00a0 Exodus 20:12, &#8220;HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER THAT YOUR DAYS MAY BE LONG UPON THE LAND WHICH THE&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[65,3,30],"tags":[25,29,7],"class_list":["post-1241","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-bible","category-encouragement","category-memories","tag-children","tag-family","tag-testimony"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
