{"id":1237,"date":"2012-04-26T19:00:56","date_gmt":"2012-04-26T23:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=1237"},"modified":"2012-04-25T12:03:15","modified_gmt":"2012-04-25T16:03:15","slug":"keeping-the-sabbath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2012\/04\/keeping-the-sabbath.html","title":{"rendered":"Keeping The Sabbath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fourth commandment is &#8220;Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.&#8221;\u00a0 Wow, what does that means by today&#8217;s standards?\u00a0 In the Old Testament there was a whole list of things that couldn&#8217;t to done on the Sabbath.\u00a0 The Jewish Sabbath was on Saturday and no work could be done, not even cooking.\u00a0\u00a0 I would be in quite a pickle if I couldn&#8217;t do any work on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Christians traditionally observe the Sabbath on Sunday, since that is the day they believe Jesus rose from the dead after His crucifixion.\u00a0 So what is it we can and cannot do on Sunday?\u00a0 I remember when all the stores were closed on Sunday and we spent the day relaxing or visiting relatives.\u00a0 That was nice, But today,\u00a0 I even have parents who drag their children out of Sunday School to go to soccer\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 practice.\u00a0 This may not be a problem for some and it depends on one&#8217;s personal convictions.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers work in the fields, people go shopping, go to sporting events, and work from dawn to dusk in the yards.\u00a0 How is that keeping the Sabbath holy?\u00a0 I believe there needs to be a balance with this principle, as with all things in our lives.\u00a0 Picking flowers for the neighbor on a Sunday afternoon is not a violation of the Sabbath, it&#8217;s ministry to a shut in.<\/p>\n<p>I believe we should attend church on Sundays to enjoy fellowship and joint worship; to hear the Word preached and be encouraged by other Christians.\u00a0 We drive 45 minutes each way to church.\u00a0 That doesn&#8217;t bother me because if it takes all day to God&#8217;s bidding, so be it.\u00a0 The Sabbath is His.\u00a0 If I have time for an afternoon nap, great&#8230;I am resting.\u00a0 If I sip an ice tea by the pool and swim a little, I am relaxing.<\/p>\n<p>Who can tell you where the line is? Where we stop honoring the Sabbath?
