{"id":1232,"date":"2012-04-24T16:03:48","date_gmt":"2012-04-24T20:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=1232"},"modified":"2012-04-23T23:18:33","modified_gmt":"2012-04-24T03:18:33","slug":"make-no-idols","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2012\/04\/make-no-idols.html","title":{"rendered":"Make No Idols"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second commandment is, &#8220;You shall not for yourself an idol in any form of anything.&#8221;\u00a0 In biblical times people worshipped many different things, from golden and bronze statues to cows and monkeys.\u00a0 Some worship toads or the sun and moon.\u00a0 We are not to make anything that could become and idol.<\/p>\n<p>Other religions worship idols, like Buddha and molded creatures form the sea, snakes and dragons.\u00a0 The children of Israel made a golden calf to worship when they tired of waiting to Moses to come down from Mount .\u00a0 They couldn&#8217;t see or feel the God he spoke of, so they wanted something they could touch. They gathered together their gold and melted it into the form of a calf.\u00a0 Then they could see what the were worshiping.<\/p>\n<p>God was not happy!!<\/p>\n<p>People today don&#8217;t necessarily actually make themselves idols, although they can.\u00a0 We are more likely to allow some other thing to take our focus away from God. When we look to other things for our peace, our hope, our solutions to life&#8217;s difficulties, we are creating idols.\u00a0 Believing that the Internet has all our answers is making it like God.\u00a0 The Internet is very useful and one can find a lot of information there, but only God knows all things, understands all things, and controls all things.<\/p>\n<p>The best weatherman in the world cannot make it rain, but God can.\u00a0\u00a0The best doctor in the universe cannot heal your body, but God can.\u00a0 Only He can build up mountains and tear down whole cities with one strong wind.\u00a0 Only God can shake the earth and bring destruction to one home and never touch the little hut at it&#8217;s side.<\/p>\n<p>Our God is all knowing, all powerful, all loving, and\u00a0full of grace and mercy.\u00a0 He knows us inside out because He put us together in our mother&#8217;s womb.\u00a0 He understand our emotions and how our brains work.\u00a0 He knows just what we need before we even do.\u00a0\u00a0 Why would anyone want to create another god?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The second commandment is, &#8220;You shall not for yourself an idol in any form of anything.&#8221;\u00a0 In biblical times people worshipped many different things, from golden and bronze statues to cows and monkeys.\u00a0 Some worship toads or the sun and moon.\u00a0 We are not to make anything that could become and idol.
