{"id":1228,"date":"2012-04-23T16:03:38","date_gmt":"2012-04-23T20:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=1228"},"modified":"2012-04-23T16:03:38","modified_gmt":"2012-04-23T20:03:38","slug":"no-other-gods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2012\/04\/no-other-gods.html","title":{"rendered":"No Other Gods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I will begin my series on the Ten Commandants and how they relate to today&#8217;s society.\u00a0 The first command is pretty straight forward.\u00a0 &#8220;You shall have no other gods before me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whether you call Him Jehovah, I Am, the Creator, the Holy Trinity or anything else relating to the God of Israel, He is the same.\u00a0 He demands the same honor and respect.\u00a0 He is all powerful and all knowing.\u00a0 He loves us unconditionally and His mercy endures forever.\u00a0 His timing is perfect, His wisdom not to be compared, and His grace is sufficient for all situations.\u00a0 Who wouldn&#8217;t want to worship and serve a God like that?<\/p>\n<p>The commandment states, no other gods before me.\u00a0 Sometimes we do put other things before our service to God.\u00a0 Perhaps you don&#8217;t consider that having other gods, but anything that keeps us from yielding our whole being to God, can become another god.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t actually have to bow down and worship a thing for it to push almighty God from His place.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you choose to attend church only once a month and not pay your tithe.\u00a0 After all, you need all your money and the weekend is the only time you have to enjoy yourself.\u00a0 If you spend every weekend on your boat on the lake,\u00a0 does that replace God?\u00a0 If you would rather go shopping than help a friend, does that become a god to you?\u00a0 If anything or anyone takes first place in your heart, then you have chosen another god.<\/p>\n<p>What things do you talk about?\u00a0 Do you love to tell of the wonderful things that God has done for you?\u00a0 Do you delight in giving testimony of His great love?\u00a0 Or, do you tell all your friends about your new car?\u00a0 Do you want others to see all the fun stuff you have, like a motorcycle or camper; your new house or fancy game system?\u00a0\u00a0 These things are not wrong to have and enjoy, but they shouldn&#8217;t replace your relationship with God.<\/p>\n<p>There is a fine line between just enjoying your stuff and allowing it to replace God on the throne of your heart.\u00a0 Only you and God can determine when you have crossed that line.
