{"id":1214,"date":"2012-04-17T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-04-17T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=1214"},"modified":"2012-04-16T18:28:38","modified_gmt":"2012-04-16T22:28:38","slug":"volunteer-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2012\/04\/volunteer-week.html","title":{"rendered":"Volunteer Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week is National Volunteer Week.\u00a0 Volunteering is a wonderful way to serve your community and make a difference in the lives of those around you.\u00a0 Jesus did a lot of volunteering, but He called it ministry.\u00a0 Have you ever tried it?\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite rewarding and just makes you feel good.<\/p>\n<p>Many local organizations and\u00a0social agencies could not do their work without the support of hundreds of volunteers.\u00a0 In Fremont alone there are many choices; everything from delivering papers at the hospital to sorting clothes for our local Share and Care.\u00a0 Share and Care is an organization that provides clothing and household items for just one dollar a bag.\u00a0 They get mountains of donations, all of which must be sorted, sized, and deemed ready for future use.<\/p>\n<p>We have a food pantry, a soup kitchen, and a homeless shelter all that need volunteers.\u00a0 We have many church groups that use volunteers to do community service projects.\u00a0 The Humane Society is a fun place to volunteer, if you like cute furry things.\u00a0 What better way to spend a day than snuggling with a kitten or play catch with an abandoned dog?<\/p>\n<p>I volunteer my time doing all kinds of things at the homeless shelter.\u00a0 I have scrapbooked their history since the beginning.\u00a0 I have served on the Board of Directors. I have made homemade jam for them and put up sweet corn in the freezer when they got a large donation.\u00a0 I have cooked meals for the residents and served as an after hours staff volunteer.\u00a0 Every little bit helps.<\/p>\n<p>I recently ran into a young man at Walmart who looked familiar.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t place him, but he remembered me.\u00a0 He said, &#8220;Aren&#8217;t you the lady from the shelter who had me come in out of the cold and gave a hot meal?\u00a0 I remember that the office was closed for the weekend, but you told me to come back on Monday.\u00a0 Then you found out I hadn&#8217;t eaten in 2 days and you marched me right into the kitchen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though I couldn&#8217;t stay there, you sent me on my way with extra fruit , snacks, and bottled water.\u00a0 I will never forget your kindness.&#8221;\u00a0 Now that made me feel good!<\/p>\n<p>The Bible tells us that if we give even a drink of water to a stranger, it is as if we have given it to Jesus.\u00a0 Each time we reach out a helping hand, God sees it and credits it to our account of loving Jesus.\u00a0 That alone should make you want to become a volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week is National Volunteer Week.\u00a0 Volunteering is a wonderful way to serve your community and make a difference in the lives of those around you.\u00a0 Jesus did a lot of volunteering, but He called it ministry.\u00a0 Have you ever tried it?\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite rewarding and just makes you feel good.
