{"id":1005,"date":"2012-07-27T12:00:01","date_gmt":"2012-07-27T16:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/smalltownamerica\/?p=1005"},"modified":"2012-07-23T14:48:22","modified_gmt":"2012-07-23T18:48:22","slug":"what-happened-to-freedom-of-religion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/smalltownamerica\/2012\/07\/what-happened-to-freedom-of-religion.html","title":{"rendered":"What Happened to Freedom of Religion?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In August of 2011 President Obama\u00a0put into law a ruling that has caused the Catholic Church to be concerned.\u00a0 In his attempt to overhaul the health care system in America, he put into motion a law that requires all employers to provide birth control products as part of their medical coverage.\u00a0 This law is to take effect in August of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>For most people this isn&#8217;t a big deal, but for those who believe\u00a0 all forms of birth control, including abortions is against their religious beliefs.\u00a0 This law will apply to all Catholic hospitals, as well as any non-profit organizations and colleges or schools.\u00a0 All of these employees will be offered birth control, free of charge and with no co-pay.<\/p>\n<p>The window of exemption from this law is so small\u00a0that only a few people can qualify for it.\u00a0 The Catholic Church, from its very beginning, has said\u00a0that the use of birth control is wrong.\u00a0 This puts them in direct opposition to what they believe is God&#8217;s command.<\/p>\n<p>The first biblical reference to birth control in in Genesis 38:8-10.\u00a0 When Onan allowed his sperm to fall to the ground to prevent impregnating Tamar, God became so angry that He killed Onan.\u00a0 That would cause me to think that God is against birth control.<\/p>\n<p>I am not Catholic and I don&#8217;t think that birth control is nessecarily wrong, unless it is after conception.\u00a0 Abortion is murder in my view and we all know that isn&#8217;t a good thing.\u00a0 We are told in Romans 13:1-7 \u00a0that we are to render to the government what is due them and render to God what is Gods.\u00a0 We are to obey the laws of our nation&#8230;&#8230;UNLESS they conflict with God&#8217;s law; or what we believe to be God&#8217;s will for us.<\/p>\n<p>There are many other examples of religious beliefs over ruling the law of the land.\u00a0 The Amish don&#8217;t pay taxes, they think it&#8217;s a sin to own a car, they have a very strict dress code and many other beliefs that we think are unusual.\u00a0 BUT&#8230; the law does NOT\u00a0require them to pay taxes, or wear certain clothes or stop riding in a horse draw buggy.\u00a0 Some laws make special accommodations for Muslims or Mormons, why not the Catholic church?<\/p>\n<p>If we are free to believe and practice any religion in America, then why try to force people to go against their personal convictions?\u00a0 Where is the separation of church and state?\u00a0 We aren&#8217;t allowed to sing\u00a0Christian songs at Christmas, lest we offend someone of another belief, yet we should be forced to obey a law that so violates the very core of Christianity?<\/p>\n<p>No man or government has the right to force an indiviual, or organization to act in violation of their personal convictions and beliefs.\u00a0 If we allow this to happen, we will no longer be a nation who offers freedom of religion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In August of 2011 President Obama\u00a0put into law a ruling that has caused the Catholic Church to be concerned.\u00a0 In his attempt to overhaul the health care system in America, he put into motion a law that requires all employers to provide birth control products as part of their medical coverage.\u00a0 This law is to&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":420,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[11,53,26],"class_list":["post-1005","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-or-feature","tag-convictions","tag-freedom","tag-politics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>What Happened to Freedom of Religion?
