{"id":68,"date":"2015-05-06T18:46:16","date_gmt":"2015-05-06T18:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplyfabulous\/?p=68"},"modified":"2015-05-06T18:46:16","modified_gmt":"2015-05-06T18:46:16","slug":"whats-your-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplyfabulous\/2015\/05\/whats-your-story.html","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s Your Story?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all have one. \u00a0A\u00a0<em>story<\/em>. \u00a0Good or bad, happy or sad&#8230; we all have a life story that tells the path we have taken and the experiences we have been through. \u00a0But often, we can become attached to these stories &#8211; whether we actually want to or not.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere along the way, we get used to the patterns in our life. \u00a0For instance, if you struggle with anxiety or an addiction&#8230; even though it may be a negative aspect of your life, you are familiar with it. \u00a0It&#8217;s comfortable, it&#8217;s expected and it&#8217;s your &#8220;normal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The same can be said for the people in your life.<\/p>\n<p>If your mother has a history of being overbearing and condescending, then that is what you become accustomed to and you expect her to continue to fulfill that &#8220;role,&#8221; whether it&#8217;s consciously or not.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you want to change your story?<\/p>\n<p>Is it possible to break out of your old story and start writing a new one?<\/p>\n<p>YES.<\/p>\n<p>The key is recognizing that you&#8217;re stuck in your old story in the first place. \u00a0Once you recognize the old beliefs you are carrying around &#8211; and the emotions and outcomes these beliefs cause &#8211; you can work on changing them. \u00a0No matter what you&#8217;ve been through, you\u00a0<em>always\u00a0<\/em>have the opportunity to turn things around. \u00a0And once you realize that your life is in your control, the turn can happen quickly.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you change your story?<\/p>\n<p>*Let yourself process what \u00a0has happened in your past. \u00a0Don&#8217;t &#8220;stuff&#8221; your feelings deep down inside&#8230; acknowledge them, feel them, and then let them go. \u00a0Give yourself permission to release them.<\/p>\n<p>*Replace the lies you used to believe with new truths. \u00a0If you&#8217;ve always told yourself, &#8220;I&#8217;m unreliable&#8221; or &#8220;I&#8217;ll always be a mess&#8221; and you want to change that, change the words you speak to yourself! \u00a0Whenever the old lies start to creep into your head, don&#8217;t acknowledge them and meditate on them. \u00a0Simply let them pass through your mind and replace them with new truths &#8211; &#8220;I extend myself grace&#8221; or &#8220;I am becoming more reliable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>*Do not worry about the actions of other people in your life. \u00a0You cannot change someone else&#8217;s behavior. \u00a0Instead focus on changing your own behavior and your own beliefs, and be amazed at how others&#8217; reactions toward you will change as well!<\/p>\n<p>It is never too late to change your story. \u00a0So what are you waiting for? \u00a0Go ahead and start writing a new future. \u00a0The pen is in your hand!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all have one. \u00a0A\u00a0story. \u00a0Good or bad, happy or sad&#8230; we all have a life story that tells the path we have taken and the experiences we have been through. \u00a0But often, we can become attached to these stories &#8211; whether we actually want to or not.
