{"id":185,"date":"2015-10-29T19:55:39","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T19:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplyfabulous\/?p=185"},"modified":"2015-10-29T19:55:39","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T19:55:39","slug":"a-blast-from-the-past","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplyfabulous\/2015\/10\/a-blast-from-the-past.html","title":{"rendered":"A Blast From the Past"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend, I ended up rather spontaneously visiting a friend that I&#8217;ve known since my freshman year in college. \u00a0We had tentatively talked about me coming there or vice versa, but then it sort of fell by the wayside. \u00a0On a whim, a few days beforehand, I asked if I should still come and she said yes, so off I went!<\/p>\n<p>Little did I know that God was orchestrating the whole thing.<\/p>\n<p>In my past, I have dealt with being in an abusive relationship. \u00a0In fact, all total, the whole thing for me dragged out for almost 4 years. \u00a0But thankfully now, having been through that experience, I am able to recognize the &#8220;red flags&#8221; much more easily and quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Such was the case when I met my friend&#8217;s boyfriend a couple months ago.<\/p>\n<p>I saw all the signs &#8211; the moodiness, the possessiveness, the jealousy, the violent tendencies, the false bravado, the irresponsibility. \u00a0It&#8217;s kind of crazy actually when you educate yourself on the traits of an abuser, just how accurate they are every single time.<\/p>\n<p>So I knew that this wasn&#8217;t a good situation for my friend, but just like me when I was in it, it was hard to get through to her. \u00a0I said what I could, but ultimately had to just wait and pray for her. \u00a0Thankfully, she broke up with him a few weeks ago, so I was relieved and excited to see her single again. \u00a0Although I must admit, I also knew from experience, that chances were the break wasn&#8217;t a clean one.<\/p>\n<p>I was right&#8230; they had seen each other a few more times since then and I could tell she was wavering about whether or not to take him back. \u00a0Again, no surprise, I&#8217;d been there. \u00a0But the way the weekend ended up playing out, was actually pretty amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, he did what I was afraid of and continued to &#8220;stalk&#8221; her by cell phone, house phone, showing up at her house unannounced and even showing up at the restaurant we were at, getting thrown out and returning at least 5 times. \u00a0But the good part of it was, that I was able to use my experience to help her.<\/p>\n<p>I knew every thing he was going to do before he did it.<\/p>\n<p>I knew what it all meant in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>I knew what to say to her and what to tell her to expect.<\/p>\n<p>And I could understand everything she was going through and thinking &#8211; good or bad.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully he will be out of the picture now for her for good. \u00a0But regardless, I will be there for her because I understand what it&#8217;s like to be in her situation. \u00a0I know what it&#8217;s like to love someone and hate them at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>And I am still literally\u00a0<em>amazed<\/em> that God can use your experiences for good at just the right time. \u00a0I had no idea any of that would happen when I went off for a quick getaway. \u00a0But I am so glad that God used me to help my friend and made my own experience have greater worth.<\/p>\n<p>Never underestimate the good that can come out of the storms in your life.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you can&#8217;t see it at the time, God can.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s pretty cool like that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend, I ended up rather spontaneously visiting a friend that I&#8217;ve known since my freshman year in college. \u00a0We had tentatively talked about me coming there or vice versa, but then it sort of fell by the wayside. \u00a0On a whim, a few days beforehand, I asked if I should still come and&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":589,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[417,140,193,189,26,419,420,416,138,292,415,33,217,414,418,143,141,149,22,357,341,216],"class_list":["post-185","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-abusive-relationship","tag-christ","tag-christian","tag-christianity","tag-control","tag-divine-design","tag-divine-timing","tag-domestic-violence","tag-experience","tag-friends","tag-friendship","tag-god","tag-gods-timing","tag-good","tag-knowledge","tag-lessons","tag-life","tag-life-lessons","tag-love","tag-relationships","tag-spirituality","tag-timing"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
