{"id":93,"date":"2011-04-19T09:54:01","date_gmt":"2011-04-19T13:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=93"},"modified":"2011-04-19T16:29:05","modified_gmt":"2011-04-19T20:29:05","slug":"betrayal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2011\/04\/betrayal.html","title":{"rendered":"Betrayal"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_115\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115\" style=\"width: 517px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2011\/04\/JudasBetrayal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-115\" title=\"JudasBetrayal\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/04\/JudasBetrayal-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;Judas&#39; Betrayal&quot; by Caravaggio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When our daughter, Carol, was 14, she had a good friend in California. \u00a0They had met on a Teen Mission trip. \u00a0Her friend wanted her to come for a visit in California. \u00a0 She even bought Carol a plane ticket. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Arriving at the airport early that morning,\u00a0Carol and I sat in the airport waiting for the time for the aircraft to load.\u00a0\u00a0Then, she realized she had lost her ticket.<\/p>\n<p>We went to the airline clerk to ask what needed to be done. \u00a0She curled her lips in a frown. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nothing,&#8221; she said, &#8220;you can&#8217;t get on the plane without a ticket.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then she smiled, &#8220;However, what&#8217;s your name?&#8221; \u00a0Carol told her and she grinned, &#8220;Someone found your ticket and turned it in to us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All of us have gotten ready for a trip or extreme effort only to have something bad happen along the way. \u00a0But few of us have confronted the type of betrayal that Jesus faced on his journey to our redemption. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The scriptures tell us that on the night before his crucifixion, Jesus understood that one of his disciples would turn against him, turning him over to the authorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jesus even knew the person was Judas. \u00a0Nevertheless, that doesn\u2019t mean that it didn\u2019t hurt for Jesus to have one of his closest friends turn him in to be killed.<\/p>\n<p>After Judas had left the\u00a0<em>seder <\/em>celebration, Jesus had prayed for the disciples and The Church. \u00a0Then he took his disciples to a garden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Judas knew where the garden was because Jesus and his followers went there often. \u00a0Judas brought soldiers and guards to the garden along with the Jewish leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They had lights and weapons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jesus asked, \u201cWho are you looking for?\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_99\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99\" style=\"width: 459px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2011\/04\/1.-carravagio-The-scourging.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-99\" title=\"1. carravagio The scourging\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/04\/1.-carravagio-The-scourging-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-99\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;The Scourging&quot; by Caravaggio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the temple guards told him, Jesus said, \u201cI am he.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The guards and Temple leaders fell to the ground.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Simon pulled out a sword and cut off the ear of one of the men. \u00a0Rebuking Peter, Jesus healed the ear.<\/p>\n<p>The soldiers arrested Jesus and took him away.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus had 12 close friends. \u00a0As was the custom of the day, they lived with him and learned from him.\u00a0 They heard God speak through him. \u00a0They had come to understand that this man was truly God &#8212; the Messiah &#8212; their long-awaited deliverer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet, one of them was so evil that he brought the Temple leaders to Jesus so that they could kill him.<\/p>\n<p>There are going to be people in our lives who are going to hurt us.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Friendship is risky.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>People will turn against us. \u00a0One study says that we can only have 35 friends at one time in our lives. \u00a0Of that 35 there will be 10 to 12 who will share a close relationship with us. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But does your friendship extend to Jesus?
