{"id":698,"date":"2011-06-06T05:00:18","date_gmt":"2011-06-06T09:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/?p=698"},"modified":"2011-06-03T09:36:18","modified_gmt":"2011-06-03T13:36:18","slug":"building-a-life-or-a-legacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/simplelife\/2011\/06\/building-a-life-or-a-legacy.html","title":{"rendered":"Building a life or a legacy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/simplelife\/files\/2011\/06\/MILLER-CYCLE-LAMPS-by-old-school-paul.jpeg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/06\/KGrHqZhwE3OYEKsL6BN1Di6o13Q0_3.JPG.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-700\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/06\/KGrHqZhwE3OYEKsL6BN1Di6o13Q0_3.JPG.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a>When my father salvaged a signed \u201cMiller\u201d chandelier from an old Charleston, South Carolina,\u00a0mansion, Mama didn\u2019t want it in her house; so Daddy hung it in the attic.\u00a0I asked if I could have it.\u00a0 I was about 11 years old and I loved the antique glass and the brass swirls that framed the sections.\u00a0\u00a0Whenever my dad and I were in the attic together, I would remind him, \u201cRemember you gave that lamp to me.\u201d\u00a0 He would shake his head in agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, when my husband and I moved to Florida, one of the first things I wanted to do was to collect my original \u201cMiller\u201d antique\u00a0from my parents\u2019 attic.\u00a0 Over the years, I had done some investigating about \u201cMiller\u2019s\u201d\u00a0 from the antique\u00a0professionals in Charleston.\u00a0 I learned that the famed artist Tiffany was a contemporary of Miller.\u00a0 I was told, \u201cMiller did with brass what Tiffany did with glass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the time that both Edward Miller and Louis Tiffany were creating their masterpieces, some of Miller\u2019s work was as valuable as a Tiffany\u00a0because Miller worked with brass, rather than glass. \u00a0During the time that I was doing my original research, I was told that Miller\u2019s work would become as valuable a Tiffany, even though Miller\u2019s\u00a0name has become somewhat obscure.<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/06\/Lamp-by-P.-Pickett-by-MillerWelds.com_.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-701\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/06\/Lamp-by-P.-Pickett-by-MillerWelds.com_.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"88\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, my \u201chall lamp\u201d is not worth nearly as much as an original Tiffany.\u00a0 It is the legacy of Tiffany that has made the\u00a0difference in the value of their art pieces.\u00a0 Tiffany was an artist who endeavored to create beauty.\u00a0 Miller was a business man who endeavored to bring kerosene lamps to the world, thereby building a business in Meriden, CT.\u00a0 The\u00a0Miller Company is\u00a0still\u00a0making quality\u00a0kerosene lamps.\u00a0 Tiffany didn\u2019t have a business.\u00a0 His works are displayed in art museums.<\/p>\n<p>These two men have both left an important legacy to the world.\u00a0While Tiffany has become a household name in regard to art created at the turn of the 19th century, Miller\u2019s company is still the standard by which kerosene lamps are built and designed.\u00a0 And many modern-day households regualarly depend on the kerosene lamp during severe weather events.\u00a0 Miller\u2019s lamps are still being manufactured.\u00a0 The creation of Tiffany\u2019s art ended when they buried the artist.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the question we should be asking ourselves is, what kind of legacy are we creating in our lives and ministries?\u00a0 \u00a0Will be end up being the Miller\u2019s whose work continues,\u00a0while the notoriety\u00a0dies?\u00a0\u00a0Or will our ministries be like the Tiffany\u2019s whose notoriety grows but the works die with the person?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-702\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/06\/5162057727_0817436ab4.jpg.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-702 \" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/234\/2011\/06\/5162057727_0817436ab4.jpg.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Moody Church, Chicago, IL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>D. L.\u00a0 Moody wanted his legacy to be a continuing ministry.\u00a0 He built a church and a school.\u00a0 Both are\u00a0still in existence.\u00a0\u00a0We see others whose ministry legacy are buried with them.<\/p>\n<p>What are we building?\u00a0 As people of God,\u00a0what is of more value?
